SX/SXi/SXi Pro Just picked this up.....

Hey everyone. I'm new to the forum and could use some suggestions. My boss gave me this stand up in exchange for my repairing his Polaris SL650. I laid out $350 for the Polaris parts and in exchange he gave me this Kawasaki 650SX.

I think it is an '88 or so. Exterior pretty much done, but engine seems OK. I have some questions:

1) The oil cap in the front of the motor, what type of oil goes in here and how high do I fill (to the edge)?

2) Anyone know where I could get a new hood piece that goes around filler cap?

3) Is the pipe in the pic stock? Not sure what it is?

4) An mod suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Yea, everybody that buys their 1st kawi asks the oil question.... DO NOT put oil in there. the only liquid the ski gets in gas mixed with oil. dont trust the injection. take that little pump off under the timing plug and put a block off plate on it... and a vacume cap in the nipple that the oil line runs to on the carb. Ill send you a block off plate if you want. I have a few laying around. I doubt anybody will argue with me about that!

I would love it if you could send me the block off plate. I want to remove the oil injection. I've removed it on all my other skis, and definitely want to do it on this one as well. I'll PM you my address.

ride it a lot and dont spend much $ or time on mods
650 will always be a 650, even with mods
If you like the standup; move up next year to a better ski

I hear ya, but I probably will keep it a while. Don't need it to be crazy fast, but some basic mods would be nice. Def want to get the 44mm and some other stuff like mats, bilge pump, waterbox, prop, ride plate, etc.) nothing too crazy and I don't mind going used parts.

If I drop a grand into it, that wouldn't be much IMO to have it look nice and run great.

A grand is too much to drop into an old 650sx in MHO!

x2....you can buy a clean squarenose for that much...sell that for 600+ bucks, add that grand and you got a nice superjet ready to ride!
just imo...either way makr sure you try it in the surf

YEP! I played with the Kawis first. Ive got a 650 that I spent $5000 building not including the $8000 airbrush job I put on it, and ive never ridden it cause I rode and purchesed an SJ a week b4 the 650 was done. It sits in the basment now

I would not waste any $ modding it.... like you said ride it for a year or 2 then upgrade to a 90-95 squarenose Yamaha.
For the 650SX, I'd just do the turf & lifter wedges or straps (for subs), bilge pump, pole limiting rope, get rid of the oil inj and ride it. Def don't waste your $ on a waterbox, no performance increase only make it louder.

This link was given to me from a fella on here so I'm passing it on. I have a 650SX as well and I'm following what this guy does to mod them in the link. Additionally, to me these skis are the most fun to mod. The mod work is so easy and the skis are a great, straight forward set-up. I'm not rushing with my mods but none the less I'm having a great time doing them :bigok:

Thanks for the advice guys. I'd have a total of $1K into it if I did the mods. I had something else come up, so this may be my second 650sx. If that turns out to be the case. I'll get it running, clean it up, replace the mats and let wifey drive it & have a spare for my ski-less friends.

Let me know how it goes. I saw this as well, but wasn't sure if I could do it myself.
