SX/SXi/SXi Pro Just Picked Up My First SXI!

Hey guys, I've been looking for a ski to wrench and ride on for the last couple months out here to keep me sane through school. I'm really looking for a superjet (like everyone else), but I figured I could have some fun on this in the meantime...I've been riding 550's for awhile, but this is my first jump into a 750. Picked her up for 900 bucks so I'm happy!

Guy disassembled some things with the intention of getting her prepped for paint and lost interest. So, I got it as is. Engine was rebuilt last year (96' big pin) with new top end. She's got a factory limited pipe, advanced timing, flame arrestors, skat trak impeller (10/18 I think? - anyone know anything about this pitch?), Bilge, running premix, finger throttle, ODI grips, New turf...and I'm sure I'm missing some other stuff. She could definitely use a good scrubbing and some body/paint work. My plan is to get her running again in time for summer and tear her all apart this fall and install footholds and paint.

I've also got a factory pipe waterbox and coffman intake grate on the way. Anyone know anything about the ride plate featured in the pics below? It has the word "REND" stamped on it, but I was unable to find anything out about it.

I posted this over at pwctoday as well cuz I don't know how much cross traffic goes on. I figured this seems a little more exclusive to the sxi.

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions or advice with this ski, feel free to post up! Tips/tricks/advice with this engine are also welcome! I'm no stranger to wrenching on skis, but this is my first dive into a 750, so I'm sure I'll have lots of questions.

-Trent

i've heard of REND but havent seen one on a 750 before just the 440/550, got a picture of the other side? what are those screws holding on, fins?

id clean up all those ugly gobs of red rtv/permatex and go to 1311/yamabond/hondabond and replace that throttle/choke cable bracket with the factory pipe bracket.

that 10/18 will do you fine for the time being.

My advice is just to put it all together, ride it hard, dont do any long WOT runs with the timing advance, and just keep the oil heavy. I am running a 750 from a 92 still on the standard bore. Since i run heavy oil i sacrifice power and plugs but i think its worth it. I personally love my kawis and have no thoughts of buying another sj. if you want a sj just get the 701 its an easy motor swap and cheaper than you think (tigershark coupler, coffman's exhaust manifold, modified bed plate)

Looks like a good start, I also want to see the other side of that plate. never seen one with fins bolted on to it (if thats what it is). blowsion sells lifter wedges you could mount to get you by untill you do holds, I had them for a while and they help for ruff water control.
10/18 should be fine if its a big hub, if not keep a eye out for a big hub 9/17 or 13/18

PLD, Are you saying there is a factory throttle/choke bracket that should be with the pipe? Or is that something else I should look to pick up? I know the guy before me was running at 40:1. Is there really a need to go heavier than that?

I just got done checking out the pipe and I'm definitely going to need to replace the factory gasket between the manifold and pipe. Its in pretty rough shape. What type of sealant do you guys recommend? (If any) Also, if anyone could give me a quick idea how the cooling lines are set up with this pipe I'd really appreciate it.

Couple more things...I mocked up the pipe to get an idea of what I need yet. I figured out the lines except for one. Its the line running to the stock pisser on the right side. The line was completely off when I got it. I have no idea what it hooks up with. From the looks of it right now, everything (head, pipe, stinger) is routed out one pisser on the left hand side with nothing out the right side. Is this correct or am I missing something?

I know the lord mount is rough. Going to be calling factory soon to get a new one ordered.

yes there is a specific factory pipe bracket for the throttle/choke that also supports the chamber (football part). As far as cooling lines go on the pipe... there should be one going from the bottom of the head pipe to a tee, from that split one goes to the bottom pipe and out through the pisser. You will not have to use that stock pisser line.

The right pisser is used for a line that runs just under that gas cap cover, i think its for in case you spill gas or what not.

40:1 is perfect.

if you are replacing the exhaust manifold to headpipe gasket you do not need a sealant just be careful not to over tighten the 3 bolts

Be careful running that timing advance-- those were designed for the earlier SX models which did not have as much advance built into the factory timing curve. If you hold that thing open too long, you will be doing another top end. Wouldn't be surprised if that is how he lost his first top end...

I have a nice barely used starter if you want it.
I cant just sell you the O ring though LOL.
Or I will.. and it comes with the rest of the starter.. LOL...

Anyways, looks like a real nice 750.!!

Haha, I just bought the intake off you on PWC! The starter I have isn't pretty, but it works. Just curious - What do you want for the starter?

Found out that the timing is advanced 6 degrees. The guy had just done it last summer and had only got a few rides on it with it advanced. So the consensus is to retard it back to stock? For some reason, I thought a lot of guys running SXi's advanced the timing. Will there be a noticeable drop in performance?

97SJ- I grew up on lake winnebago. My wife is actually from mn - tiny town called Battle Lake. We get back there pretty often. We're both currently in Boston right now finishing up school. Where are you in mn?

The timing advance really should not be used on '96+ 750's unless you are running race gas. You might be ok as long as you avoided WOT runs and don't increase your compression. If you decide to keep it make sure you inspect for detonation. I have heard from a few people who melted pistons running that advance plate...

I run my water lines different than most, I feed the bottom of the head pipe instead of the top.

lines run like this.... line off head goes to bottom of head pipe. Line from top of head pipe goes to a T, one side goes to the stock pisser, the other goes to a flow control valve and then to the stinger. I also run a second line off the head to the pisser on the right. I dont use the drain by the fuel cap, just seal it off and dont spill fuel lol.

Also I suggest replacing the fittings on the pump and exhaust manifold with larger 1/2" lines for better flow. the pipe in the hull is already 1/2" so its just a matter of drilling and tapping the pump and manifold and replacing the lines.

Thanks for the info. For some reason I figured that that pipe had it its own cooling loop separate from the head. Any advice removing the timing plate, or is it pretty straightforward?

I would just leave the advance plate in there, as long as your running good quality fresh premium fuel and keep your compression down you will be fine. I have ran it in 3 SXI's with no issues and lots of WOT runs. Just a good idea to keep a eye out for detonation because your are pushing the line, but I think its way more snappy with the advance plate.

Good find. Now get back in there and get the rust off those parts.
