That ocean sit on top is cool, but whitewater kayaks are the sheat.
The only problem with them (well, the 99% of owners) is that they usually have no idea of what to do on the water.
A few years ago we were doing the safety escort for the NY swimming club, there were about a dozen of us on couches, about 40 whitewater kayakers, and like a hundred or so swimmers. There were also a few NYPD and USCG boats there.
The rules were as follows:
a line of swimmers going one mile from A to B, then back.
Kayaks (sit in group from don't know where, hired by some NY mag) going in parallel and watching them.
We on the couches watching all of them and providing assistance as needed.

The waves were about 6', usual for NY. The race was canceled at about 1/4 mile from the point B.

We ended up with rescuing about 20 swimmers (mostly picking them up and loading them on the boats) and half of the kayakers, then recovering the kayaks and towing them to the beach.
What was killing me, is that the kayakers needed a heavy herding, they did not have any idea about the signals, they were basically clueless on the water. That was probably the most ignorant group of "boaters" I have ever met.

On the other hand, I have a great respect for the real whitewater guys or the occasional ocean kayakers.

Do you mean whitewater kayaks like the 6' and 7' boats? That would be a workout in the ocean with 6' waves. Did they not know how to roll back over?

What about the family with 18 kids and 3 dogs that is fishing AND swimming at the ramp?

I like kayaks and I've had pretty good dealings with them on the water. If i had more patience I would totally own one. But who wants to walk when you can fly!?

That's a pretty cool setup wolf

I've never had a problem with kayakers. The thing I don't get about fishermen is that they will bitch about you making noise and chasing the fish away. Then they leave Budweiser bottles, empty skoal tins, and just general trash EVERYWHERE. Me and a buddy had a slalom water ski course setup. As soon as we started running it a guy came over & anchored his boat next to the first buoy. We kept running the course & roosting him and he kept letting his anchor out till the buoy was resting against the side of the hull. Another fisherman overheard us complaining on shore about how ignorant the other guy was and told us in a drunken slur that they had been fishing in the river first so it was their right to fish wherever. I swear they have mercury poisoning. If you ever notice it's the guys that have a cooler full of catfish & carp that are the crazy ones. I can't say I have ever been cast at. That would probably push me over the edge.

Had a guy out in the surf Tuesday in some kind of surf kayac, was cool watching him get pounded in the breakers. Way to much work for me!

Like Butti said, Its the guys fishing at the ramp that are the problem!
