Last Ditch Effort

So, im sure by now your all tired of my stupidity, BUT im gonna give it one more shot before i find a new hobbie and sell my ski. at this point i almost wished i could have been happy with just having the damn ski.

ill spare everyone on the details so long story short, my last time i took out the my ski, it ran like dirt. Due to the lack of experience i neglected to torque down any bolts from the cylinders up after all of the upgrades.

im going out one more time this summer (next weekend) and if i dont get it right this time, as i said before im just going to sell the ski, before i kill it.

SO my to do list is this before next weekend.
1 tear everything down again to the cylinders.
2 get new ADA head rings and gaskets.
3 Torque EVERYTHING THAT NEEDS TO BE TORQUED AND ADD A TON OF LOCK TIGHT.
4 pull my pump off again to insure that the prop is still on or just pull the intake grate off to see if anything is stuck between the prop and the pump.
5 pray to god everything works this coming weekend.

It was suggested that i run a leak test on my motor, and my response to that would be yes i know. Although the ski never had an issue running at all when it wasn't R & pillaged by my doing. I think the instinct to check for a leak is correct. i Also think, PROPERLY TORQUING all the bolts to evenly press the gaskets into place would help it seal correctly. BUT WHO KNOWS!? i don't.

I would appreciate any further Comments as to how im doing something wrong, i know how the constructive criticism is vitally important to this community. And if you guys are willing to help id appreciate either some torque specs for the CYLINDERS, NON GIRTLED ADA head and for the MANIFOLD AND B MOD PIPE.

My mods include, (jetworks portnpolish, brand new pistons, rings, bearings etc,... ada race head 35cc domes, msd ignition plug caps, new factory b mod pipe, areiltek cdi, 2 pissers, skat trak swirl 18/24 pitch.

Only include mod list because it might be up for sale here quickly, everything is brand spanking new and has had one ride on it all.

Wish me luck and thanks in advance for your help

If we all said "if it doesn't run the second time out, I quit" all (most) of us would be done. These damned skis are temperamental and need to be built right. You started a project, work up the patience and finish it right. Your on the right track.

What is the jetting on your carb(s)? is your gas tank one way valve functioning correctly? Make sure your battery is float charged before you go etc etc.

Art started it up and it ran great. I had art tune the carb and double check stuff. More of a visual inspection a quick min long test but thats about it. It wasnt till i put it in the water till it started running bad.

Single carb. 140 main jet and other is stock. Gas tank one way is on correctly and i believe it is functioning correctly, not starving for fuel, although i wouldnt know what the indicators would be if its not working correctly. Battery is brand new, ill put it on the charger again tonight.

That's awfully small for a ported 701 single 44.. Interesting.. And those are the jets art told you to run...?

I dont know if 140 is the exact size, it might be a 145 im not absolutely positive all i know is that he said go one more jet size up to run it richer topend. So i installed the bigger main jet he gave me. And to answer your question he said thats exactly the jetting he would run.

Sounds about right. Runs at the shop then something happens. I like what @Dartman said at the end. Follow Art....or take to a professional. If you have no body else around you and don't mind spending the extra money you can take it to him. Hope you bring some extra nickels and dimes to his shop. Smh. I would look into some of the surf riders who have shops or contact someone else

And i also agree. But for me thats THE VERY last thing i want to do especially since putting together the engine myself saved me tons of cash that i didnt/dont have. But i also think that if i put it together correctly this time it will be absolutely perfect. All the fine tuning is done. Art at jetworks really spent his time talking with me and helping me adjust the flow valves, restrictor valves, the carburetor, and the head pipe. I think i need more patience 1st of all, and i need to keep trying like smitty said. I believe if i torque the bolts down the way they are supposed to be it will run like a champ. But who knows. Maybe i am way off. The only other thing i can think of that may be an issue was the heat it was producing, which was also explained to me that because i didnt have the head torqued down and the manifold torqued down, i could have been blowing compression into the water jacket. Although it looked to me as if i had steady stream for the head pipe pisser and a weaker, but still consistent, stream on the restricted pisser. Im not 100 percent sure on really much. This is my first time doing any work on a jetski and the first time iv really started disciplining myself to further educate myself on other peoples skis and projects to see what is normal or okay and what is not suppose to happen or be. So needless to say i couldnt look at somes ski and say "yup thats the way its suppose to look and operate!" Although i do know a few things, like the importance of a torque wrench, And fuel in the carb. 2 very important things.

Depends. For things like the flywheel cover and intake manifold you want to use inch pounds. For the cylinder and head bolts you want to use foot pounds. Check out the FAQ section and download the free yamaha manual. It has all of the torque values etc.

well my last ride went as expected. did fine for a day, topend felt like i was ringing its neck so i stayed off the top end, then i took it for a short ride up the river and it cut out completely, tried to start it up and when i hit the ignition switch, it wants to turn over but its almost like it doesnt have enough cranking amps to turn it, so i left it alone. about ready to start spending some money again, thinking im just going to bite the bullet and bring it to art at jetworks and tell him to make it work.

Probably a good idea. Also pick his brain while you are there on maintenance and pre ride checks to go through to make sure it stays running for years to come.
