Looking at SJ on CL, looking for opinions on this deal.

I'm new to the standup world. I've never ridden one but I'm sure I will like it. I have a wake boat and I think a ski would be a nice addition to our adventures. I've narrowed it down to a SJ and there is one here locally. Let me know what you think about this deal or if there is anything I should be asking about. There aren't many for sale in my area so if I have to pay a bit too much for this one I will. Here is the ad: https://boise.craigslist.org/boa/d/2001-superjet/6717649391.html

Not a bad deal. Good looking ski with many performance extras. Definitely check the psi in each cylinder. Should be at least 175 psi with the ADA head and not more that 5 psi difference between the two cylinders.
This is not a starter SJ. It is a more powerful ski, and you would need to be quite careful as a newbie. But if you are in decent shape with a little bit of a crazy bent to you, it is something you could grow into.
Also the more extras, the less reliable the ski becomes, so you need to be a little mechanically inclined.
Nice to see another new joinee to the standup community!

Also, I'm definitely into horsepower. A modded ski would be right up my alley so not worried about that. I'm just worried about getting a fair deal mostly. It's hard to price these things.

they both say best offer. ask them whats the lowest they'll take for it and know they will take less than that. CA prices are a lot higher than BFE prices. the 4k one is a better deal but the 09 is a better ride. 3500 or less would be a better deal than 6000

Thank you for the reply. I'm reading that I may just like the 2008+ hulls better than the older ones due to their improved handling. What do you think of the price on this skI? https://pullman.craigslist.org/boa/d/2009-yamaha-superjet/6717223770.html I'm thinking about offering him $6,000.

I am no expert on this, but I understand that adding sponsons to a pre-2008 SJ hull essentially makes it ride like a 2008 hull. Adding sponsons for a few hundred may be an option to consider.

If you are heart set on the 2009, I would start at $5500 and would go as high as $6000. There are likely plenty of really nice SJs out there you could get in that price range. Tough to pay top end without test riding. Better to be local I guess in case you have issues when you can ride it.

Thanks for the sponsons suggestion. This looks like a really good idea and I think this is the path I'm going to go down. The 08+ are a bit more than I want to spend. I think I'm going to go with the 2001 I posted first.

The first one you posted is the better deal, it's very similar to what I bought and started with, great ski setup and plenty of power to keep you on your toes for quite awhile during the learning curve.
For the 2k difference imo there just isn't 2k worth of more ski, put those dollars towards other things - like a beach dolly, trailer, riding gear, tubbies, upgrades of your choice once you figure out how you like to ride (maybe an impeller first?), etc...
I'd plan on a carb rebuild on whatever you get, just comes with territory of a used ski and is easy to do. You'll have tons of questions, this is the right place to learn from the vast experience of others - great community and tons of people who remember starting out and are more than willing to help! Almost 2yrs into stand-up world w a pretty decent amount of tray time and I still feel very much like a newbie. Awesome sport, will keep you in shape!

Thanks for the reply. I've read the that the 2008+ hull is based off of the older one with sponsons, so why not just get that. I used to own a Banshee so I've got experience with the carbs and all.
