prices are what will kill the sport. Argue it all you want but ive almost sold all my stuff a few times last year because paying to play in this sport is stupid. I bit the bullet I have 8k into the ski im building now and its not even complete and i often think hey maybe i shouldn't do this and pay off my truck with that ass load of cash. Then just ride my 400$ mountain bike for free as a hobby.

Just like any other form or motorsports. Buy and use what you can afford. If you cant afford a 8 second race car but enjoy the sport of drag racing build a 11 second car for half the cost. Theres different levels. Yes the upper level of stand up jetskis are expensive for a "jetski" but that doesnt mean you have to have the best of the best to enjoy the sport.

Colorado! its midpoint between all the worst ride states lol, and the crappyness culminates here into the absolute worst state for riding in the entire US, Alaska included. we NEED a wavepool!

I keep hearing "lower prices" brought up. Why one of you that keep bringing it up dont take it upon yourselves to tool up and do it baffles me. Think of all the money you could make. Y'all dont even like used pricing that is sometimes 40-50% off retail.

Everybody just breezed by this one to continue on complaining about prices. I've thought about getting something going with skis as it is my passion and I feel like parts are expensive. Then I realize that there is not much money in it and I should just use that money towards something else that will net me far more profit and just buy the parts that I need. Here are some examples of things that I did to supplement my income with very little investment:

Get a push mower, chainsaw, and some hand tools to do some landscaping and tree work.
Buy a tool set and put an ad on Craigslist to do simple repairs on vehicles.
Put an ad to get free non running mowers off Craigslist, fix them and sell them.
House sit or dog sit for some people.

I no longer put ads on CL and I have a good career now, but I still don't usually turn them down when I get calls from people from years ago. Minimum wage is not meant to buy you an Aftermarket hull or a billet motor and if you are on minimum wage, you need to figure out why and move on from it. You don't even need half a brain for any of those side jobs to turn into a decent full time income, you just need to work. I am pretty sure that is the real problem.

I need somebody to come out with a towable for me to be able to get a gas can and some brews out to the ride spot. I want something that I can pull 3 miles at 35+mph, pass a couple cruisers, and make a trip around the jetty with. Next winter, I may be emptying out a hull and modifying for this purpose.

I like the way you think!

I definatly agree that its apples to oranges.. just saying in mx you can get a fine ride that will win you any amature race for like 7k also mods are cheap. But of coarse any pro racer like Blake would have a 30k a bike set up in a trailer rig around 500k but for them they get paid half a million a year and all there bikes are paid for. its such a large sport compared to stand ups.

But to imagine if Stand up jet skis took off like motocross did?? it would be amazing, there would have been nuts technoligy and multiple OEM's. meanwhile the motocross guys would be buying aftermarket frames and building motors. Tv shows for stand ups, would have been cool.

worst part about motocross is that you spend that 7,000 on a new bike, ride the :):):):) out of it for 2 years then its only worth like 3 grand.. skis do hold their value better since theres so few out there

I don't think anyone breezed right by it. To some its a common sense response. To others its a bit silly. We all know there are substantial costs in tooling up and doing something about it. We all probably know there is not tons of money in this sport. Having the talent and money to do anything in this sport is a rare mix. It's such a rarity that when someone says that, it is pretty much ignored. And it comes of a bit condescending to some.

The OP asked for ideas and thoughts. That's what is coming in this thread. Coming back with a "if you don't like it, do something about it" response isn't helpful. I think we are all adults here and things like that go without saying. But, we can all comment or complain that this is an expensive sport and the costs associated with it are prohibitive when you consider some people can only participate but a few months of the year. Is this sport cheap by comparison, sure. but you could be out on a dirtbike year-round, or a sportbike, or at a drag strip. Only rain will slow those down. When you really look at this sport, it is stupidly expensive when you compare the amount of money spent versus the time used. A motorcycle can be used as a daily driver. The same goes for a drag car, obviously not a 9-second car, but a streetable car. Jet skis are not dual purpose there is no real extra benefit from owning one. They serve a single purpose.

I'm drinking heavily so I'm going to quit. But, if you get down to cost of ownership versus time used, this sport is much more expensive than others.

I think what I said and quoted from wanderer1 should go without saying, but I think that even once it is said, people still don't really get it. JetManiac, Fast Elements, Rad Dudes and others all started small by providing for a need and building from there. Now they do anything from pay for their toys to make a living running an LLC. It can be taken as condescending or inspirational depending how you read it and what you do with it. If something is overly priced, then seriously, step in and make money from it.

All hobbies have their pros and cons and the price is just one of them. When I lived in Pennsylania, I rode a dirtbike for a shortened season and a snowboard for a shortened season but I could do both out of my backyard and their seasons were both longer than jet skis. Around here their is not much good land for dirtbikes and it is 6+ hours to some crappy mountains. Now I am 10 minutes from the ocean and I ride skis year round and am not concerned about the cost of winning an amateur title on a dirtbike.

My friends will tell you that I am one of the tightest A-holes there are with money, but I don't like to hear people complain about prices like it is raining on their parade. You can't stop the rain. You can charge what the market will pay for something or not pay someone that charges more than it is worth to you.

I used to have some fast cars too, but I stopped doing that because they just got me tickets on the roads. I'd mark that as a con for me.

I would only be good enough to do runabout, but I do wish that there were still local races. I would love to see Myrtle Beach bring back their Sun Fun Festival and get the Hydro X Tour to come back this direction. It's all so far South now, I think they forgot about NC. I'll be shedding a tear when I sell my XP's this summer.
