Call Paul at LPW, I had the same set up as you, I sent my cyl in for the freestyle porting, installed a Ada head, installed a msd inhancer, coil off of a 760, bored pump nozzle, wet wolf pump cone, and a 12/17 skatt impeller. this thing rips now, good hard hit off the bottom and pulls very strong, and runs on pump gas. I have another sj with all the same mods but has a lamey cylinder (also ported by Paul) and I swear this set up is not to far off of the Lamey

RiverRat, you have any good threads for porting the cases (62T)?

X2 on that request.

Have beer reading all I can about the case porting but with out a before and after picture it's hard to understand.

I have a nice set of cases just begging for some grinding.

Now, back to out scheduled thread:biggthumpup:

RiverRat, you have any good threads for porting the cases (62T)? Would it be worth it to port the cases only if I have no money to do the cylinders?

I would hold off until you have the cylinders ported. That way you can port match the cases to the cylinders and smooth out any transitions w/o haveing to go back and do it twice. Porting the cases is pretty staright forward and is a all gain no loss situtation. All you are doing is allowing air to travel up the transfer ports w/ less obstructions.

Dude I hear ya. I actually only have a bpipe, ada head, skat swirl 12/17, a few other things and no porting or ignition/lightened flywheel and I swear my ski feels like its snappier off the bottom than my buddies ski who has an identical setup with porting, ignition/lightened flywheel, and concord. His seems to pull harder in the midrange, but the funny thing is we are about equal on top. I also rode a stock stroke Lamey recently that also didnt feel as snappy off the bottom asmy boat. I really think a lot of it has to do with how the boat is setup and if you're boat is propped out right. I'm putting an enhancer on before Daytona and possibly lightening the flywheel, but thats all I'm going to do until its time for a rebuild then I'll have the cylinders/cases ported by Paul, Art, or Chuckie. Not sure yet they are all great mechanics.

Since you are on a tight budget. I can't believe that everyone hasn't jumped all over that fact that you have a J prop and want hit. Throw that thing to the curb and get you a freestyle prop. 2 years ago I changed props went from a I prop to a concord, bord the nozzle and added a freestyle cone send my flywheel to JR and it felt like a new ski. The punch was just what I wanted for $250ish. Flywheel was $55 and sold my old prop and bought a new one for $180 extra then bored my own nozzle. And if you have some extra cash the timing advance you get with a MSD enhancer is worth the money easy.

Yeah man I agree. I dont know why everyone is so quick to recommend porting right away. If I was on a budget which I was when I just built up my ski 2 months ago I focused on getting a good prop, head, and ignition. Maybe I'm wrong, but thats what I always thought was the best route.

Don't get me wrong I would love to have my cylinders/cases ported because I know it's definitely worthwhile, but I definitely think a good prop and head should come first if you're on a tight budget.

I think intake grate should come a little sooner dont you think. The stock one is horrible. Don't forget a good set of reeds either.

I also look at it like this a killer prop, bored nozzle, MSD enhanser, Doesn't need hours and hours of carb work like a port job does. If you don't get talked into a new crank because your is 4 years old and while your at it might as well punch it out a few mm's then you end up with a 3K dollar motor job and are running an old prop. Yea your porter might nail the tuning right with a port job the first time but you can always dial it in to make it perfect and if you do somethign wrong then BOOM your budget just went to hell FAST.

I might be the only one but I hate to go to the lake and my ski run like crap... All your buddys are riding and you putt around then take it home to tear the carbs off again and lower the pop off and increase your pilot jet once more...That SUCKS doing it week after week.

WOW I was ranting.. Ok gotta go but if you want some serious low end punch buy a cheap 29 cc dome head and run straight race fuel for a summer... There is nothing like it...

A comment to Powder's post...I can't wait till I tell the wife I am a PORN STAR Got me a 850cc ADA 5mm stroker for next year LOL

Honestly I think it's best to take it in stages kind of like Wamiltons steps he has on his website. I know they're kinda cheesy and his packages definitely are not the cheapest route, but I agree with his logic.

This is how I would do it.

Stage 1
Worx 201 Intake Grate
Skat Swirl
Aftermarket Ride Plate if you're like me and you like the ski to corner well

Stage 2
Footholds/Turf
Shorten Stock Handlepole
ODeg or Straight Bars (Shortened Turn Plate if you dont mind spending a little more)
Seal Stock Hood

Stage 3
Bpipe
Girdled Head
Carbon Tech Low Tension Reeds (Until you're ready to spend the big bucks on some really good reeds)

Stage 4
Enhancer/Modified Stock CDI
Lightened Flywheel

Stage 5
Porting
Bigger Carbs
Better Reeds

Thats how I would do it. Right now I've completed stages 1-3 and a few other things I have added along the way. I'm about to put an enhancer on this weekend before Daytona. So far I am very very happy with my setup. Alright go ahead and flame away on my "Stages".

Whats really cool about doing it that way is if you're someone like me who is relatively new to the sport and wrenching then you can do pretty much everything yourself up until Stage 5. When it comes to tuning the ski the package you have put together is such a common package that you can get a ton of help and guidance. I've learned so much in the past couple of months setting up my ski and definitely wouldn't have been able to do it without the X and some really helpful friends.

By the time you are ready to get into Porting and bigger carbs you have a good understanding of the 701 and you'll be able to get the most out of and properly tune that new ported motor.

This was a very good thread to read thru. Most of the information is right on & dictates what is important to that particular rider.
I have really only one thing to add...............
Look at the big picture, as it pretaines to you. make calculated moves as to not waste time on parts you don't need. Look to the future, if possible & try to imagine where you will be this time next season or the season beyond. Make sure you are able to ride the motor & not let the motor ride you!!! It's very true that not one part makes the motor, but rather a grouping of these parts that add up to the Motor you thrive for!!!

Thank you all for the great comments & endorsements, I really apreciate them.

ski ya, Paul

In my opinion this is where you need to start, just as speedfreak said.
Get in contact with one of us freestlye shops and work out a tuned package thats already been done so you don't wait time and $$ just to figure out what won't work! Start with just bolt on's and stay away from porting for now! You can always do that later.
If you serious about having low end... Buy a complete package setup from one of us that all we do is set-up skis for freestyle!

I want to take this time to all that have given such great advice. All have individual setups to what has best suited them and it seems there are only small variances between them. The foundation from all of you has been the same and I am truly appreciative to all of you and I hope some time I may be able to help some of you.

Did you have any porting done? I seed a lot of people mentioning free-ride porting.
As far as the head, ADA, is there any brand better than another?
I appreciate the heads up on the 12/17 Skat.

With your set up I would assume an "I" prop would be better than a "J". If you are on a limmitted budjet then a prop is not where I would put $$$300 at first. The "J" prop can easily be pitched down to an "I" by Impros or by Youngs Performance (RD 615 449- 2373) for like $30.00. Also, with 185 or less compression, and a "B"pipe (not a pipe like type 4 that mounts to cylender) and with light to no porting, you do not have to spend $300 + on a girdle head. You can simply have yours milled or buy a cheap milled stock head and achieve same results for $60 to $75.00 + shpg. ea. way. Porting usually turns into a hone and sometimes a bore & new pistons and would run you at least $500.00 by time its all said and done. Or you can buy a dremmel and just match ports up w/o removing sleave material yourself. PM MATTE, I believe he has a sport port pattern. A lightened Stock flywheel and modded CDI are both decently priced mods that will help bottom end. Lightening stock flywheel is like $100 including shipping ea. way. PM KEEFER for price on modded CDI (I think its like $60.00 or $75.00 w/ trade in). This would be where I'd start on a budjet.

WOW wish my "limited" budget was like yours. BTW you didn't get it unless you have pics to prove it. :pokey:
