I am going to try something different, I am painting the base a burnt/copper metallic (whole ski) then spraying a special type of paint called thermochromatic paint over the top. Also going to use blue and white Hydroturf. Should be interesting.

lol I actually have a quart of that burnt/copper metallic on my shelf. I bought it, sprayed a test panel and it wasnt what I was looking for. Then went to KTM orange, alot of ppl say it looks like a pumpkin.

lol good to know. I am sure the guy at the paint shop will manage to come up with something that I like, I am aiming to paint it like my motorcycle used to be before it got stolen it was a real nice candy orange paint job. You should post a pic of your ski I would like to see the color.

I wanted a candy metallic orange paint job also, but the problem was keeping to a industrial paint that is durable. Also candy paint is a tri-stage paint in order to get the effect. Otherwise the bright colors like to drown out the metallics. I decided a tri-stage wouldn't be good on a jet ski that gets ridden (difficult to touch up).

The original metallic orange I picked out was more like a copper and it looked great inside my garage under white light, but as soon as I brought it outside it was tons darker, almost brown. I went back and got this color, which is a solid, it's a single stage so it's easier to wet sand without worrying about moving the metallic. I had tons of runs..

I agree with your synopses I have decided to skip on the pearl and candy paints and rather just stick to 2 stage paint, a burnt orange using a lighter base metallic to keep it from looking brown. Also if I was going to try and do it myself I was going to stick to a single coat but I am having a professional guy do it so I will let him worry about the metallic running lol. Here is an example of the color I am aiming for, it looks kind of dark cause I was in the garage at night and my cell camera sucks but it will give you an idea. I am also going to have him try spraying what is called Thermochromatic paint over the top of the orange it will hopefully work out well. Here is a link so you can see the effect
. As far as durability I already know I am going to tear the paint up over the next year or two so I am not worrying about touch ups to much I have just made peace with the fact that it will not stay perfect for long.
