Surfriding Matt Smith sank his new EVO!

On this morning's ride out to the surf, in open ocean (Probably 60' deep water) Matt Smiths new EVO stalled and started to sink. When it was obvious it was going down, we frantically tied a tow rope to his bow loop and tried to tow it nose up before it slipped under. No use, it had so much water in it, when we started towing it just nose dived and down it went! Matt looked like he'd just lost a family member! I've never seen some one sweat in 58 degree water! We stopped towing immediately and it popped right back up to the surface- barely! At least we answered the question "Do EVO's float?" They do, but not by much, only about 2 inches of the back was above the water. Everything turned out good though, we ended up towing it backwards at idle speed and got it back to the ramp.

So the real question is why did it sink in the first place? Especially in calm water and while he was riding in a straight line on plane. Matt said after he got the water out of the motor and got it restarted he went through everything. He checked all the obvious stuff, no cooling lines had come off and no cracks in the exhaust or hull. The scupper couldn't have been the problem because he was riding on plane when it started to take on water. Unfortunately we haven't really figured out why it sank at all. The best theory we can come up with is that Matt uses a quick disconnect on his flush kit. We're thinking that it must have stuck open the last time he flushed it and was pumping water in the hull as soon as he started to ride, which ultimately sank the ski. Then after the sinking, when Matt got the engine running and hooked up the hose to the quick disconnect to run the motor, the valve became unstuck and is now working properly. If that's what it was, we'll know for sure on tomorrows ride.

i've thought about those things sticking open since i've had some pretty crusty ones on skis before, but only thought about the exhaust fumes aspect, not the water aspect. scary. glad you got it back

May have been answered in the other thread, but does it still have RRP rear scupper?

EDIT: NVM read the other thread that the scupper was blocked off.

Do you have a stock bilge with a bored nozzle?

Just out of curiosity, will this cause the water to back feed into the engine compartment? I just experienced this same thing yesterday. I cant figure out where all the water was coming from. I'm running a bored nozzle and stock siphon bilge but just had the problem occur this weekend.

The stock siphon bilge will not work right or not at all with a bored nozzle. Worst case would be pressurized water feeding into the hull through that line.

I run a stock bilge and bored nozzle. As long as it is "plumbed" right it should not be a problem. The OEM bilge line runs "up" to the top of the engine compartment, make sure yours is tied up there too.

If the tube thing (left side of pic) that sticks out into the pump is cut off when the nozzle is bored it then pushes water into the hole instead of causing a siphon. If you still have the tube it's something else...

EDIT: didn't know about routing it differently.

Yes, if you taperbore the siphon off (which many do) you need to throw some silicone in there to seal it.... #ZERO will taper bore and leave the siphon in tact if you ask.

Thanks guys. That's gotta be what it is. Funny thing is it didn't start happening till half way through the day which seems weird to me. Yes the siphon still has the loop in it that runs the plumbing up above the water line.

Wow glad your ski somewhat floats. That's about how much a completely filled sj floats, just the rear tray about two inches. When my ski sank (worst feeling ever) it took on water like such as you described however I didn't have a siphon. Perhaps check the midshaft housing seal

if you didn't block off your scupper you would of never known you had a water problem.....
Very true Other than possible water ingestion depending on his F/A setup and coupler cover

Glad you didn't lose that thing! I couldn't imagine that feeling
