Meanwhile, in Canada

I just saw that guy again and had a chance to chat with him. He's an ok joe but still running a fair risk. He's not wearing a drysuit, just a 5/3 wetsuit. The board is neat but there are no permissible laws in Canada for these things yet according to what he told me. It is a hydrofoil powered by a big battery. It's quite well thought out other than it's not a jet drive, it has a collapsible two blade prop. If that thing ever flipped up and tagged your bean you're probably not going to like it if you remember what happened lol.View attachment 393664View attachment 393662
Gotta get me one of those props for the old Minn Kota!!

I have been looking at the jet foils, but these jetsurf boards look much more fun, and you can ride them in shallow surf.
On the facebook page looks like they go for 6-8k used

That sounds about right. That one he has, he said costs about 12k. He said he gets about an hour or hour and a half of run time and about 2 hours to charge. It has a handheld remote control that is waterproof and it floats...as it should lol...but it shows a battery indicator and when the system is almost dead, it will shut down to give you just enough for about 15 minutes of paddle board speed to get you back to shore. He also said the prop will automatically fold flat on no thrust forward momentum situations to reduce drag if you want to ride a wave surf style. He said that one will do 25mph...I was close in guessing 30 :)

Meanwhile in Canada, a couple more of our finest from the bottom feeders of the gene pool  Water temps is still only +5*C (~42*F), same air temp, a mix of snow and sleet, east winds at about 20km/h (~12mp/h) and look at these two heros...in a canoe. And now we know why the waterways are locked down, and why we have water police and coast guards. Stupidity, sheer stupidity.

I'm a touch jealous. They've blocked our boat launches - I could kart in but I would have bylaw there within the hour.
Where's there a bylaw against using your ski? The launches are closed because they're a public facility where people gather. Boating is allowed as long as you're only together on a boat with people you live with.

When the launches were closed off I contacted the OPP asking about it. They said all waterways were closed for public use until further notice and fines could be handed out if caught. The point was they are trying to divert all resources in keeping the distancing law under relative control rather than take authorities and coast guard resources to go rescue somebody from a flipped over canoe or an engine failure. At this time of year they should know better than to be out there in the first place when no other boaters are around to help should something happen. The waterways here are now open and the launches have had the barricades removed. The OPP just told me a couple of days ago that there is nothing they can do now about people choosing to risk their lives if they want to go out.

I agree that people shouldn't be out there alone, but the OPP gave a statement on the news advising people not to go on the water if not necessary. Not that it was in any way illegal. People can be ticketed for using closed launches, marinas and parking lots. I can't find any other restrictions online about it. There are even some boat launches open to the public. Kawartha lakes is advertising that they'll be opening tomorrow. And this is from the town of Innisfil website:

"The COVID-19 Emergency Measures By-Law creates offences for use of the Town’s water access points and boat launches for launching trailered watercraft. Staff are working on solutions that may allow safe access at a later date through a reservation system.

Does that mean nobody is allowed on the lake?
Lake Simcoe has not been shut down. Residents who are able to access the lake privately will still be able to travel the lake"

I'd contact the OPP again for clarification. There are a few articles out there about police giving incorrect tickets or advice because of confusion about the situation.

Hey man, I'm only quoting exactly what I was told straight from the horses mouth. As stated, our launches here have been reopened. They have been for about a week or two now :)e0b0e026483321ae3c490f8ab32e2d35.jpg

Spoke to Town of Georgina regarding boat launches on Monday to see if they knew anything - They didn't - they are taking it a day at a time. Hoping the Doug Ford includes them in phase 1. If not its a $880 fine for using a closed public launch to access Simcoe. Good to know.

Our town closed the town beach/picnic area on the lake I live on, where this time of year you get maybe 6 people casting from shore for trout, and they always spread themselves out since they don't want to cross lines or give away their 'secrets'. Meanwhile the boat launch is open and the bass boats are as thick as a swarm of gnats out there. They all get bent at me when I'm out on my SJ, no matter how much room and respect I give them, which I do, since I am an avid fisherman also. But 'F' them, I pay HUGE taxes to live on this lake so if they don't like it they can head to some lake in Canada...…...oh.....wait...….

Yep and I'd tend to believe what the police say, but in this case I think it was bad info about getting ticketed for being on the water.
The whole system is so muffed up I don't think anyone knows what's what right now. I've read about the police charging a group in Belleville for not following the distance law, and in the same write up they also charged a couple at a random spot check because they didn't live at the same address. But around here the local police won't charge anyone for not following that law and even allow people from different households to have sleepovers. It's a very hypocrite based arrangement if you were to ask me. Instead of drawing some sort of line and standing on it, they leave it up to each jurisdiction to decide.
