Custom/Hybrid Melmack's very unique 300sx build

picking up my 300sx monday. you sir have inspired me greatly. originally i was picking up the ski to do a 650 convert but ur ski looks like ablast. as per 4 stroke ideas i have been playing with those thoughts a lot. was thinking of trying a single cylinder 450 but the hard part is impeller choice due to loads more torque down low but less rpm. will be doing almost your exact build mod for mod can't wait to see a 4 stroke ski ont he water.

There are several designs available. More details once the prototype is bolted to the hull. It's a four stroke only because the industry considers it one. IMO its a one stroke. One design actually runs two smoke oil and one doesn't. Either way they burn cleaner than most 4 strokes and have a power to weight ratio better than one to one (Lbs to HP). The key here is finding a motor that works in our app and price point. Most of these are in cars or aircraft and are either too large or too expensive. This motor, once developed is actually inexpensive to manufacture and very small. Therefor, it could compete as an American built replacement for the good ole 701.

One more thing, Just picked up one of Wet Wolf's FX-1 cones. He made me a great deal so I consider him our first sponsor of the project. Thanks Bruce!

Damn, and I just sold a 300sx last year that I had sitting around for 12 years. Really wish now I had kept it. Still, I will be keeping my eyes open for another one now I guess.

OK, managed to get some parts together for the next motor. In a week or two, I'll have a nicely built 550 reed motor in this thing. Should be making around 60-70hp with all the mods I'm planning. This should wake up the ski and make it perform like I expect the Rotary to do.

Looking for a stock or aftermarket FX-1 prop. If anyone has one, please PM me with a price plush shipping to 78130.

Rotron is basically the same thing as the motor we are looking at from Freedom motors. The motor from the freedom link above was my first choice however, that design is too large for stand ups. While it would bolt up to a blaster no problem, the center line on the shaft is too large at 5 1/2 inches. This forces us to go with a smaller much engine for now until we can develop a scaled down version of what you see in that 1200. That's why we went with the small and light 300 hull for testing. For more info on the freedom motor, check out that link listed above. There is a smaller '150cc' engine that can be built as a 200/400/600 cc motor. This is the 'bolt on power' I referred to earlier. It can be built as a 40-50hp dual with the ability to bolt up 25-30 more hp just by adding a third rotor. Keep in mind the numbers they post are for limited generator timing curves and carburetion. These are not tuned for high output but for efficiency. We would install much larger carburetors or throttle bodies and tweak the timing curve considerably. I have spoken in depth with the guys at Moller international about this.

So is the rotary motor on hold indefinitely or will we be seeing a running ski this year? This is a great project, hopefully more people will get on board and we will see a working solution in the next year or two.

Well, it's hard to say. We need funding to build the motor ourselves or we need someone else to produce the engine for other purposes. Then we can buy some from their production lines at a much reduced cost. We where originally supposed to have this chance by august. That company has not come through and wont be producing the generator motors. So, we need money to produce our own for now. I'm exploring other options with companies like Rotron and Arixo. Until we have a solution, I will continue to work on the hull. I was hoping to showcase the prototype at Daytona this year. There is still time so don't count us out yet.

Subscribed!!!! I new I saved my 300sx for reason! And what kind of funding are we talking here. I am sure we can scarp it up and get this rollin. PM me.
