SXR More newb upgrades on the SXR...

Just got into stand up's at the end of this summer and since I have two now, I figured I would pull in the 09 SXR and dress her up a bit. So far I have re-turfed the tray and I did the side rails too. Both of those jobs were pretty easy. I ended up buying a SXR pre-cut turf kit from Ebay and the rail kit from Blowsion. The heat gun came in handy and the install was fairly simple. I really like the camo theme, it really helps to hide the seams and a couple minor mistakes made by a first-timer.

I actually ended up having more trouble with the Dakine foot straps but I'm almost done with those too. Just needed some longer bolts for the tray strap since there is too much turf and padding for them to reach the nut and tighten down. Either way, it's a clean install with no noticeable cuts. I installed the nuts in the tray and turfed over them, then went back and found them to bolt the straps down.

Next up is a stiffer pole spring, new chin pad, and a custom turf pad on the bottom of the pole to cover up and protect scratches when the pole is raised to high and hits the nose cover. Thinking I will probably turf the dash since I have plenty left over. Also, I might throw on a pole limiter and some hood straps too.

Lastly, I removed the R&D intake and grate combo, and I replaced the plate with a stock d-cut plate. I plan to go with a Worx 222 for the intake grate, but I might do the 225. Not sure yet. I also have an adjustable flow control valve, but I am reading threads that say these won't work with stock exhaust setups. Unless anyone knows a way to dry out the waterbox on a stock exhaust, I might end up getting a wet pipe. After all, I have an excuse now. :)

Anyway, here is a pic of my first ever turf job. Thanks to this forum I was able to do this and many other mods myself. Re-turfing the SJ will come later this year, and it will be more difficult with the footholds, I'm sure...

looks great. post up some more pics. do you have any of the progress or only the finished product.

i thought i saw a post saying the stock sxr waterbox was capable of being dried out some. let me know what you find

Thanks bro...yeah I need to take some better pics...I have a freakin' Nikon D700 upstairs and I am always taking pics with my washed up cell phone. Once I am done and clean up a little in the garage I'll take some good pics. I have read a few conflicting threads of how to install a flow control valve on a stock setup. Going back out and looking at it though, I think the only way to dry out the stock exhaust safely is to use smaller diameter tubing or maybe an inline restrictor. I am considering a wet pipe at this point....just not sure I want to spend the dough, considering this is my back up ski and the one the homies use while I'm on the SJ. On the other hand, if it has a wet pipe maybe my brother will stop asking me to switch out and let him ride the SJ!

I installed the pole spring this evening, SUPER easy to do even by myself. Now the pole floats just under about half way up. I bet this will make some beneficial difference to us old folks with lower back pain too.

x2 on the pipe and flywheel. I suggest tapping another hole in your pump and running one cooling like to the motor and one to the exhaust, it allows you to dry out your pipe without over heating the motor.

so you would be supplying more water to the engine because there would be less fresh water circulation out of the exhaust?

couldnt you just tee the line going to the exhaust with one side being a bypass or pisser and the other side a restricted line going into the exhaust.

does anyone with an sxr know what the spare tube is coming out of the bulkhead going into the engine compartment. i cant seem to find the other end which looks like it may come from the pump

This link is a good read, and most of the hoses are labeled...only thing different is I probably would just tee the main line and send a smaller amount of water from it into the top of the exhaust, and then tee the bypass from the head to plug in the other head line that goes overboard. That way I wouldn't need to tap the pump. It makes sense in my head at least...

did you wrap the turf under the side rails or are the flush with the edge?
Looks awesome. Im going to try and turf my 550 this weekend.

Thanks! Up on the dash there isn't much room to tuck the turf under the rails, but along the tray there is more room so you can tuck some under. On the dash I found it is easiest to glue it down while leaving a little extra on the sides and then go back and trim it with a razor blade flush with the rail. This gave me the best fit versus trying to trim it perfect then glue it down.

Also the heat gun is pretty much a must, it makes the turf much easier to stretch when you need it too, as well as speeds up the process of drying the glue before before you lay the pieces down.

I'm a novice but what I have learned:

Coat each surface twice and dry it before you attach the turf.
Do the sides and dash first, and the floor last.
Try not to get sloppy and spill any glue or it may stain the turf.
After you lay a piece down, tap the turf firmly with a rubber mallet or something to make it stick really good.
Have a straight edge and some sharp razor blades handy!

Good luck, and take some pics when you're done.

I know there are some nice gains with the wetpipe and flywheel, but I always read the stock SXR prop was pretty good. What do you suggest looking into for a prop?

I'm running the stock prop on mine. Works really good with my sxr setup. I have Wetpipe, TBM flywheel, and Flow Value in my sxr. It's a great setup for fun riding and chasing bigger boat. Huge difference in performance from stocker.

I'm running single cooling with flow valve. It does great job limiting the amount of water going into the waterbox. Hardly any water come out the exhaust outlet when I'm flushing water out on the trailer. Also, the sxr has two bypass lines one goes to the front and other to the pump. I just blocked the one to the pump and have it to go out the front. It looks like I'm running dual cooling because of two pissers in the front of my sxr. That way so you can know the water is flowing good by seeing the water coming out the pissers in the front of you.
