Similar to an enhancer - i.e., it replaces the stock CDI. However, it is fully programmable, so you can set your timing however you want throughout the entire RPM range.

I have had used one in my ski for over a year and it still works fine. I has been soaked with saltwater from a leaky e-box gasket and the metal part on the outside is totally rusted, but it is still working.
But, performance wise, I also don't think they are really worth even the $100+ range they go for used. Even if you are racing you can mod your stocker to have no rev limiter. How often do we hit the rev limiter in freestyle? Cheaper and more noticeable difference to advance static timing slightly and just avoid long WOT runs.

One thing when using Advents you MUST use 62T stator and flywheel. Sorry to bust you on this one as this statement is not true.

Chuck are you saying you do or don't have to run the 62t then, you lost me with the "sorry to bust you" part. I have been thinkiing about getting an Advent and i have both 61x and 62t stators and lighten flywheels.

Alright guys I'm thinking about buying an MSD Enhancer, but I am reluctant to because of the reliability issues I keep hearing about. I know there are good ones and there are bad ones, but after talking to some people I found out that back in 2001 MSD changed manufacturing facilities or something like that and a bunch of bad enhancers were made. Since then MSD has had a bad reputation for their enhancers.

Just trying to get an idea of how many people have had good enhancers and how many have had bad enhancers.

Thanks:biggthumpup:

You left off my situation which is ( I have had an MSD enhancer bought in 1997 and it still work like new) Same I believe goes for Keefer and Toby I believe. May be you should find an old one cuz I see no probs with them at all.

i've personally owned 3 and i think one went bad on me a long time ago. i had the problem where you would hit the start button and it would crank over and over but it wouldn't spark until you let go then it sounded like it wanted to fire just as you let off the green button.

stock cdi's go bad too.. so.. whats the difference, right?

I had this same problem and thought it was Enhancer, turns out the start stop switch contacts needed cleaned. Figured that out after flywheel was off timing checked and put back together, then e- box disected and inspected then put back together all to finally realize it was s/s switch all along.
(still got that bad Enhancer?):sneaky:

I noticed a huge difference between modded stock CDI w/ stock flywheel and Riva lightened flywheel w/ MSD Enhancer, not sure which one was majority of improvement though.

From my exp. the flywheel is a much bigger help then the MSD. The MSD makes life better but it isn't a "Oh shizz i just messed my pants" kind of difference.

I know that Greg (Advent) has had his problems with the Advents CDI boxes but I've been getting good ones for a year or so, And he does warranty them if you have problems...

The 3 Advents I had all had issues with being too far advanced on startup. Once running they were quite nice, but they idled really rough.

Have all the problems been sorted out with them, ie. are they being produced consistently and are they reliable?

If it wasn't for the initial starting problems killing my battery and bendix, they would be good.

i put an MSD on both my blaster and SJ this year. they are very similar set ups except my sj is a 62T with porting and my blaster is a 61x w/o porting.

i put the MSD in my SJ at the same time as i put a lightened flywheel on. i noticed a REALLY nice difference and it really woke the ski up.

i put the MSD in my blaster and didn't notice any difference at all other than a smoother power band transition from bottom to top.

just from personal experience, i'd say the MSD goes nicely with a lightened flywheel. i could be wrong though. it might have been all the flywheel i noticed in my sj?

I've had an enhancer in my 2000 SJ since new with no problems whatsoever. I noticed a very nice difference in low end snap and acceleration. Ski only had a pipe, prop intake and reeds at the time but I couldn't believe the difference. Now, we put one in a 1991 650 SJ which had a pipe, head, prop reeds and It didn't seem to do much of anything so who knows ??? Also, I ordered an Advent a few years back and it didn't work from the get go. Sent the thing back twice to get reprogrammed and it never would even start. It would turn over but sounded like the firing sequence was off or something. I got pissed and told them to give me my money back. SO I rely on my 7yr old MSD Enhancer that still runs nicely.
