Msd enhancer vs protec modded cdi

Yea the 61x box not good at all.
OCD, you have 70% of the puzzle.
Now you need to build a pressure chamber.
You will be shocked at how you will start hearing spark misfires above 5,000 once you pressurize the chamber with a spark plug in it.
You will instantly find out how important spark plug gap is.
Take an old trashed dome weld a tube to it and put 3/8 thick plexiglass bottom on it so you can still visually see the spark. Using pressure reg slowly raise the pressure in the cylinder at high rpm and once you get over 120psi you see the spark starts to misfire at a .035 gap once you get over 160ish you will only get about 1 spark out of 50 to gap the plug and your timing curve will jump all over the board.
You find that the stock ignition can only fire accuratly above 150psi with .015 plug gap.

Spot on - that was the advantage of the MSD when racing the limited class back in the Superjet heyday. You could get it to fire decent with 195 psi at 6800-7000 rpm.

The Vilder, spell check??
Was a cdi box marvel back then. I installed over 100 and not one was ever an issue and two curves 100% programmable.
Never used msd till the new free ride big motor stock ignition

We rebuilt tons of 6m6/61x/62T's over the years and one thing was 100% noticeable , regardless of the search for the ultimate timing curve ......
the MSD's crapped out like 50% more ( new /used /hot or cold ) than any other stock CDI or stock modified CDI .....

That being said...I got to order some more modified CDI's from OCD :0) .....

The original purple vilders worked. The blue and red ones had issues

you still needed to keep an eye on spark plug gap with the Vilders

Very cool info, great thread and appreciate OCD and you for sharing the info.

Would it be a better choice to mod stock CDI for higher Rev limit and advance the timing than to get a msd? Wouldn't they basically do the same thing?

My thoughts exactly BK. I have been following this one since it started. I have only ever had 2 enhancers, the first one I did notice a little holeshot improvement. It was an older model and worked quite well with my Speedwerx race version pipe, but the adjustable rev rheostat dial did not work. I was always hitting the limit just past half throttle. The seller was really good though and refunded it. Then I went through that whole nonsense ordeal with the new one I bought having garbage crimped connectors right from MSD. I never noticed any holeshot improvement that I can recall, about the only part I liked was the higher rev limit. I ran it about 3 times but knowing those connectors to be unreliable at best I was able to send it back for refund too. Since then I will never buy another MSD enhancer again. If I go aftermarket, it will most likely be a new Advent T3. For now, the stock CDI has worked very well, never discharges the battery...unfortunately Advents will as they are directly connected to the battery and are powered up all the time, but also the stocker never just shuts down the ski when it dies (MSD), you get some sort of notice that it is on its way out. I really appreciate what tnt has been posting and pay attention to it, many thanks tnt for your insight and willingness to offer your experience, and not to dismiss anyone else as I am very grateful for their help and knowledge too, but if he is still out there and listening/watching...many thanks to Chuck the Supertune man as well. Much can be learned from these gents.

I have owned 2 enhancers. Bought the first in 1999. Bought a used backup in 2005 or so. Installed it on 2006 when I thought the first was going out. Turned out to be just fine. Far as I know it would still work! The used one is still on my ski!

Same here... Was Used when I got 10 years or more ago and still running strong. Also my Epic HX3 worked good in my 8mil Lamey 863cc but couldn't fire my Gen 2 1200, but the msd enhancer fires it no problem. Epic back in a smaller engine boat

If you have a 90's vs of the mad enhancer I believe them to be much better quality internally then the new post bankruptcy msd.
I have no facts to back that up.
Just 30yrs exp with how many failed in 90's vs how many I have gone bad in last 3 yrs
In 2015 I had DASA 1k drop a cyl from detonation, same setup I always run, fixed engine for customer spent a day on his boat on water and it never felt right or sounded happy and free.
Tore motor all way down and found nothing, went back to lake and half way through day it started dropping a cyl, customer said oh it's bad coil, I responded it's almost never the coil, he installed new coil and it ran about 10 min did the same, I put new enhancer in and it ran great for about 2 tanks and then backfired blew up water box never to start again, repaired water box installed another new msd and it fired up ran great, two days later its back to one cyl, warranty another msd and now the boat ran fine since.
So that being said, I have gone through, 3 analog total loss brains in one day back in 90's with msd Rep assisting in the install, 5 digital box msd in one day and now 3 enhancers.
