My own business?

gun sales are good.

keep an eye on stocks. IF i had 10k i bet i could double it in a month with stocks. look at the extremely volutal companys like underarmour and SIRI. company's that go from .05 a share to .67 a share in 6 monthes. thats what you need to tap into.

Then go to school so you can make money doing something you enjoy.

Agreed. To add a little more... Don't know if you have a bachelors degree or not but sometimes you can get certifications for what you want to do in a few classes at a tech college, especially if you're looking for hands on jobs.

My friend Dan went back to school for 1 year and 6 months and became a polysomnographer (sp?). He loves it. Its third shift though.

He makes like 25 an hour.

I think all medical fields are killer right now.

I am definitely in the wrong line of work...

I wish the work was more consistent, but water and mold remediation is a pretty good gig money wise. And the work is relatively easy. Certification is also easy. 3 days ish for each certification. We have to do other work along with remediation, but the money is GOOD when it happens.

My advice and I am not being sarcastic here, don't quit your day job.Honestly I am looking for something at least part time right now to get me through the winter months and am seriously considering getting a full time job and just doing the Jetski repair on the side, there is not nearly as much money in it as people may think.

One thing I will say is to not put all your eggs in one basket.

There are always companies out there that can mass produce the same item for much less due to the fact they are buying steel/aluminum in large amounts at a time.

If you do produce your own, make them your own. Give people a reason to want to use YOUR trailer or stand and not just choose a cheaper alternative thats the same.

With trailers, most people just want something that simply works. Most don't look at the fact you may have used better material, stronger winch ropes or the fact that you use LED lights and bearing buddies. Most people just simply want to know if it will haul their ski and how much.

Oh...and im not trying to discourage you from starting a business. If you do start one, try to keep lower overhead if possible. Meaning don't go spend 50k to build a huge shop. Looks and see what is selling(around here Pontoon trailers are always in demand). Best of luck!

Amen to that. I have a few friends who repair jet skis (rentals) here in Panama City Beach. During the season is OK, but four to five months out of the year sucks. I can't imagine making "good" money in a Smallville, Alabama town.

I don't consider 25 an hour that great of money really (killer). It's good enough to make ends meet but I personally have higher goals.

If the OP graduates college and engineeres composites for a living he could do what he loves and make real money.

Amen to that. I probably won't make near as much money with my current business as I did with my previous one, but if I only make $25 per hour in the end, I'd be better off working for somebody else. I learned this a long time ago from a trade magazine and it struck a chord with me. There are a lot of folks who go into business for themselves with blinders on and, in an effort to get business, charge much less than they should and end up making less than if they flipped burgers at the local fast-food joint.

$25/hour is $52,000 a year. It might sound great if you make less than that now. It might even afford you a bit of a life style change but it doesn't get you that much.

I know, I learned the hard way. I used to make more than that. I've started my own busness before, I've also climbed the corprate ladder without a degree. Now I'm going back to school to get a real degree to do a real job and will let me put some letters after my name.

I really hate thinking the job I'm at now is just to make ends meet and not getting me ahead. I feel like I'm cavitating (spinning my wheels) but that's what I need to do while I go to school.

Someone should have told me this 10+ years ago.

Playing the stock market is too much like gambling. So is real estate. Use the market for retirment (IRA, mutual funds, etc). The only way you will make money, every time, is an education, hard work, and sacrifice. Don't let anyone else tell you different.

The problem with this business is that it was underfunded from the getgo,I basically got in on a wing ,a prayer and the money in my back pocket, after ten years I still have half a wing and the prayer. The realmoney maker in my business was buying and selling used PWC's .The repair side of the business gets in the way of that big time.I want to scale the repair side down,do quick service, carbs, starters, impellers etc and spend more time getting used watercraft prepped and ready to sell, less hassle ,more money and way fewer customer to have to deal with.

That sounds like a good plan, Terry.

Agreed. I've known two people that did this for a living. Both were pretty successful but they both say that it's cut throat and if you can't afford to lose what you put in then you have no business playing that game.
