i'm really starting to lean hard towards a -4 superfreak. and will likely call Tem Monday to order one up...

I am, however, completely surprized that I have not heard one person talk up the bigger motor option.

Only thing you forgot to mention to everyone was the part about the wind making the surf here. a light hull can get pushed around in the surf here. Chop winds and a light hull used to be a bad combo, not speaking about the new wider hulls, but on the older carbon SJ based hulls it was.

yup, and while I do agree with the wind (which makes our waves on Lake Erie) making a light hull harder to ride - that's less than 25% of our riding conditions. Having a heavy hull for 25% and sufforing for 75% is what has been making this decision hard, and pretty much why I started this thread.

That, and I just wanted to get more input on the topic...

Frosty, when and if you speak to Tem about a hull,he will spend some time talking to you about what you want out of a hull.l think one of the things about a Freak is being able to make it "your" ski.Someone correct me on this, but is there any other hull builder that asks you questions? (l don't think so) And will make a ski that is 0 to -5 inches to suit your riding.Yes or no to a front foothold, how much reinforcement, etc.

Good points, but I think some skis are just the way they should be from the manufacturer - you just need to decide on your riding style and conditions. Those skis are my by champions and they know what works and it shows on water.. my .02

do you have to do any reinforcement to the freak when you get it for surf riding or are they good to go right out the box? also are you guys runnen tubbies on them or do they shred enough as is?

I wish you had asked me at Wavedaze man, I would have let you take my SF for a spin. The skis don't get pushed around easily. I had my reservations in the beginning of the year about my SF and if I'd be able to ride it at high speeds consistently. I was worried it might be too light. Now I will never go back to anything else. I ride boat traffic and chop all the time and at consistent throttle and never have an issue. If I stop being lazy I'll post some vids where you can see I'm running 40+ consistently with no issues. I absolutely love my SF and I really feel you can tailor them to any kind of riding. The responsiveness of the hull is amazing, and they are just so well rounded for every kind of riding.

There is absolutely no need to reinforce them. Tem (the builder) will ask you when you order what you use it for and he'll make a layup custom for you. As an example, the carbon Freaks have been made as light as 49lbs and as heavy as 56.6lbs (my own).
But the customer does not need to reinforce.
Tubbies aren't needed. The hull is plenty wide as it is.

Exactly right. I ordered mine as a flatwater boat and wasn't too worried about high speed performance or that it might be too light in surf.
It handles as stable as an SXR in the mid-50's. I've had it in overhead surf and it does better than any other ski I've tried in surf.
It is a very well rounded hull.

uuh! i also do the same to any potential customer looking to get into a new hull and have done so for years!
I know that their is alot of bias opinions here on these boards but test riding any of the AM hulls out is a must before making any decisions. It is the smartest thing to do!

yeah i really regret not riding anyone's AM hull (reguarless of make) at freerides. I have a real thing against riding other people's skis... in hindsight, it might be making this easier than it is.

Frosty I might be biased here. But I suggest rocking what you got and putting a mag and a big motor. You have a nice clean hull. I would toss a power valve 800 ish motor in there with a 144 setback 12 vane mag and call it a day. You saw fist hand what my tank of a boat can do.
