Other my winter 2011/2012 mental debate over a new hull or a new motor

X2 on that. I haven't been on an am hull yet, but am leaning towards a gen 2 bob due to cost. But ultimately want a carbon sf. Hopefully get off my arse and go ride a gen 2 bob this winter. They're only a few hours away from me.

don't settle due to cost, wait a few more months and get something you will be happy with

Frosty I might be biased here. But I suggest rocking what you got and putting a mag and a big motor. You have a nice clean hull. I would toss a power valve 800 ish motor in there with a 144 setback 12 vane mag and call it a day. You saw fist hand what my tank of a boat can do.

Well, I did it... keeping the hull (for now) and building a bigger motor. Just ordered a Dasa 850PV top end. In the end, it was cheaper to build a bigger motor than it would be to build a new hull...

there will be an LPW ported 61x cylinder (83.5mm bore) in perfect contidion, and an ADA girdled head with 33cc domes for sale in the near future. As well as a set of used 62t cases... good condition.

Also picked up a trim set up for flat water fun... :woot:

Stoked!!

Just gonna give the blue hull a paint job over the winter... yes, going back to Frosty orange again,. blue is just such a sad color... LOL

Thanks for all the input guys... much appreciated and valued.

Just my opinion.....a bigger motor in the same hull will be the same ride as before. Just a bit more grunt.
A new hull is more fun because it actually changes the ride.

That said, the most fun is both. :woot:
I went to a lightweight hull last winter. This winter I'll go to a bigger motor.

yeah, i agree... but I actually like the way my -2" hull handles... next year it will be new hull time. wish I could do both at one time... but the beach house should be finished by next spring, and I'll be ready for the hull upgrade after that...

unless my year end bonus is bigger than expected

100% new hull! A smaller motor in a a/m hull feel Alot more powerful. You might even find you don't need a huge motor.an am hull helped my rideing tremendously in just a few rides. The handling of the hull and stability helped the most important part off my rideing. Just being comfortable.

more fun to build it up piece by piece...then you really understand how it works

I have had the option to jump on multiple aftermarket hulls on both flatwater and surf conditions.

The best hull to me so far has been a rickter. I liked the superfreak but didn't like the way it rolled or jumped waves compared to my SJ. Every jump felt like a flip or a flare to me. However re-entry's were awesome. There was no spot I could put the ski in to make myself nervous. Maybe with more time I would like it more. Just for explanation purposes, I have been on almost all of these aftermarket hulls with a mag pump and a bigger motor.

Frosty:I need to try your ski out with the straps. Maybe daytona? I just booked my room today. I should've taken a blast in virginia when you offered, but I was shot.

I think you will be happier in the surf you choose to ride with the big motor. Flat, you probably won't notice much difference.

yeah, i have a feeling the new motor will be awesome but not enough to really make flat water that much more more fun, even with trim. but at least I'll have my new motor built and tuned so when I can get a new hull I'll be all set. I'd love to build a new hull, but I just don't have the time either... I work long hours during the week (usually) and I need to spend every weekend at the beach house if I am to get it done by spring. Lots of drywall to hang still... my buddy will paint my old hull... and I can build the motor in no time.

Bruce, not entirely sure if I will be at Daytona this year... Kinda winging it. I didn't book a plane ticket (we fly down and let the youngsters drive our skis down). So if I do go it will be last minute and a long drive... but if I do go you can take my ski any time... Dakine straps are awesome for surf stance riding.

Frosty I have a 701 with the normal bolt ons and putting all of that schtuff into the Rev hull I bought has changed everything. I was trying to figure out what to do first motor or hull. I went with the hull and I am very happy about.

Sorry about the dilemma "need to finish the beach house".

Just wait until you put that motor in something 75 pound lighter.

There is a lot of good info here and in the end after riding my 850PV in a stock -2" SJ with destroyers, I can definitely see why you took this step first. Plus once mine is dialed in you can steal all my experience and build from there saving thousands in the end. Trust me I know, LOL Then we can get experience from all the aftermarket hull guys for next year and hopefully both make the right decisions.
