Need advice for building a race motor

So I'm trying to decide whether I should build up my blaster for racing or whether I should just pick up a used SXR and get into stock ski racing. Ultimately if I had the money I would love to build a very competitive blaster, but I'm working on a limited budget so I just want to see what I can build for a relatively cheap price.

Now I know a stroker Lamey is the way to go, but that's obviously not in my budget so I need some other alteratives.

Now I know I'll be running a drypipe and some 48's so that's pretty much decided already.

I'm obviously going to be running 62t cases, but I'm trying to decide on what cylinder/pistons to run.

Now I know most people don't like the 62t cylinders because they are more of a top end cylinder, but that will work good for me. I'm still a little confused on the different types of 62t cylinders though.

Now I know you have 701 and 760 62t cylinders then you also have a 64u cylinder. What's the deal with that? :dunno:

Basically if I wanted to build an engine as close to 800cc as possible what would I need to do without building a stroker(i.e. what cylinder/piston combination)? Also should I run flattops?

Thanks for all the help. I am really lost when it comes to building a race motor like this.

I would just build an inexpensive big bore 61X cylinder with 62T cases or even run a 760 cylinder if your on a limited budget.

The 64U is just a 701 couch engine that had a 62T cases with a single pulse line fitting that would accept 760 sleeves.

What engine parts do you have right now for your blaster?

Actually I'm on casual status until 26 Feb 08 so basically I just sit around getting paid to do nothing.

So I'm going to have quite a bit of time stuck in Mississippi doing nothing so I'd like to start slowly building up this blaster. The Air Force is putting Kelcy and I in a 3 bedroom 2 bath house and I'm trying to talk Kelcy into letting me turn one of those rooms into a shop being that we won't have a garage.:sneaky:

You are right though, once Pilot Training starts in February I will have absolutely NO free time.:banghead:

I basically need everything. The hull is complete and everything else is there like the pump, UMI steering, waterbox, gas tank, etc, but I'll need a motor, carbs, pipe, and electrics.

Probably much cheaper to pick up a used stock class SX-R, rebuild it & havemore fun/fewer headaches.

OR, put Tubby 2s on the SJ & have the best of both worlds....:purr: :purr: :purr: :purr:

Big Bore ported 785cc ada girdled head w/ 33cc domes blaster mod pipe, msd enhancer if you don't wanna run total loss novi 48's

pm godocgo or scottie mac.... they both probably have what you need

Yeah that's what I've been thinking, but then I thought I could probably build a pretty sick motor for $4000 which is what a used SXR would cost and I could slowly build it over time so I woldn't have to dish out all the $$$$ right away.

Before I start buying parts though I just want to make sure it is something I can do within my budget so I don't waste money and realize I can't finish the motor.

here is my motor

62t ported and epoxied cases
61x cylinder r&d sleeves and 85.5 flattop pistons heavy porting
trued & welded stock crank
novi 48's, riva ported manifold with vforce 2's
total loss
speedwerx pipe
girdled head with 180 compression

building it from scratch is more than 4000 but i know you can buy it used for less.

new motor
dasa pv cylinder extensive porting 81 mm kawi pistons
8 mil stroke crank
ported and epoxied cases
48 mm novis same intake and reeds
total loss
factory hiv rev blaster pipe
head with 200 + compression
similar top speed but the stoker gets there quicker.

The only thing out there that is going to get you close to Lamey performance is a big bore dominator set up.

Dominator flat top sleeves
ported cylinder and cases (and epoxied)
Decked billet head with special cut domes for the flat tops
true and welded crank

I would also run total loss, the 48s and the drypipe to top it off. Then, don't forget the mag pump, that makes as much difference in a blaster as the motor.

AND, it just so happens I have that exact same set up sitting in a garage waiting to be dropped in a nice hull...... :)

By the way, Lee did OK last year on a dominator set up. :)

man everything is forsale : )

hell if the price was right i would sell you my big bore.

scotty has too many strokers so i know he would sell the big bore.

Yeah, it is for sale. This is the motor Jason ran last year, we rebuilt it right before Nationals and it was ridden once after Nationals, so MAYBE an hour on the top end. This motor in Jason's stock hull with TL, 48 Full Specs, Speedworks pipe and set back Magnum hit near 60 set up for closed course.

$1650

You wouldn't touch this motor for that price if you had to build it.

Hey Scott is that motor the one you had for sale in this thread?

Yep, that be it. VERY nice package. If it weren't for powervalve Lamey's this would be the best Yamaha set up you could build. (for about half the price!)
