->NEED EXPERIENCED OWNERS HELP<-

Hey everyone, I am 17 years old, and I worked a bunch over the summer and saved enough money to get my first ever Jet ski. Ever since I was young I always loved the water, but my family has never really been into boating. So I am finally so EXCITED to say I am getting a new 2021 Yamaha WaveRunner. I HAVE ONE PROBLEM

My problem is I cant decide on which one to get. I have done a bunch of research and I am down to two skies.

Yamaha FX Cruiser SVHO
Yamaha FX Cruiser

So Basically the same ski, but one supercharged. Obviously the supercharged one looks cooler from the first glance, but after talking to my good friend who works on engines for a living, he quickly warned me how much stress the superchargers put on the engine and makes it more susceptible to break. Also I have definitely thought about the gas consumption difference too, but the MAIN part that worries me is the Reliability.

Just wanted to get some OPINIONS and maybe some first hand responses of people who have owned supercharged ones vs naturally aspirated.

Thank you so much for helping me!!!

Supercharged hands down!!! While I myself am more of a Seadoo guy when it comes to sit downs (Fully built 88+MPH RXT-X running 25lbs of boost) all of my sit down buddies love the Yamaha line of skis, and all have SVHO models. Once you have ridden a ski with a supercharger, there is no going back to a naturally aspirated motor. They will just seem boring. That is until you try a standup, then you sit down will just sit in the garage.... Ask me how i know... lol As far as reliability, as long as you take care of your ski, do all the maintenance, flush it after every ride, wash the salt off the motor then air the engine compartment out and spray everything down with anti corrosive spray after every ride you wont have any issues for years to come with either especially if your buying new.

Don't forget about the GP1800 series, for someone your age that is where i would be looking. Its gna be way more nimble and fun to ride.

Btw, if your serious about getting a sit down you will probably have better luck getting advice on Greenhulk.net. Thats more of the sit down forum, whereas this is more the standup ski forum.

Get the supercharged ski. It's well worth the extra cash once your spending 10+k anyway
I have a 19 GP1800R and love it. Did a Riva tune this year and ski now does 76mph.
That said, I also have a bunch of stand up's and plan to get a new Superjet next year.
Looking for total fun get a stand up but if your looking to go places and use it more like a boat get a sit down
or get a 2nd job and buy both
I 2nd go ask on Greenhulk.net great sit down info on that site

Awesome! Thank you so much, just a quick question about your GP1800R. Is it the SVHO or HO. Also how long have you had it for, and have you had any problems with it?

Just my main worry is it will be in the shop more often than a non supercharged one. Because I don't have another boat, it would not be fun to have it in the shop.

Awesome, thank you so much. I will be using this ski more as a boat, just because we don't have one. So, just a quick follow up question have you buddies that have the SVHO's have any issues with their ski?

My GP1800R is a SVHO. I bought it brand new last year. Put 26hrs on it last year. Than this year at 30hrs installed the tune.
Now at 55hrs. Everyone I know has had no problems

My friend has a 2004 FX HO supercharged and has done absolutely nothing to it but oil changes and it still runs like brand new with hundreds of hours on it.

Contact your local stealership and ask for a test ride. Or join a local riding group on facebook and see if you can test out some skis there. But unless you are out of shape and have 0 athletic ability/balance you should be looking at a Waveblaster or Standup jetski like the new 2021 superjet. The fat couch you are looking at is going to get boring real quick after going fast in a straight line a bunch of times. You can also tow them around with a hitch hauler and not have to get a trailer.

Lmaooo, I sold something but it wasn't crack or anything illegal hahahah. I actually sold Cutco knives for the summer and made a decent amount of money. My dad said if I sold $30,000 of knives in a 2.5 week period he said if I paid for half he would pay for the other half. And I was like at 20k in sales working every day and he said if I ended up getting my goal he would pay for ALL of it so I would have all my money to invest which is awesome. Super thankful hahah

This is what our economy has become. You can make a lot more pushing a lawn mower or selling trinkets than pursuing most professional careers.

I largely agree with this as a sentiment, and had this 3 paragraph tirade typed about all kinds of points in this thread, and then I realized no one wants to hear my pontification on that topic. Instead, I realized that I could ask this as a follow up: What better "professional career" can a 17 year old undertake? It's no secret that sales work generates "good money" compared to labor-type work, and it doesn't really take any hard-learned expertise (it's not brain surgery :
). I don't love that reality, but it's real, and it's not new.

That said, I, too, have lived through the disappointment of riding a sit down and getting bored with it after just a few rides. Was approximately 17 as well. My advice follows the others: going fast in a flat straight line is going to get old pretty quick, so think about getting a stand-up, with the following caveats...

1) If you aren't willing to be a bit of a gear head, and wrench on things, don't modify anything. This really only applies to the <2021 two stroke SJs, since while the 2021 4 stroke SJs aren't going to be the same level of playful fun, I don't think, they should "just run" and not be require frequent/constant upkeep.
2) If you have a group of people who ride regularly and all ride sit downs, that really means a lot! Without a group to ride with, you won't use whatever you get, I wager, so take what they all do into consideration. That, in essense, is me being thankfull for @mxracer262 , @tobyfred , @DesertSJRider , and others who get this like @air blair .
3) If you intend to ride big waves, a sit down can really be lots of fun and is potentially easier to ride than a stand up in those conditions. It's not the same fun, really, but riding in 6' waves on a sit down machine is plenty of fun.

One final thing: don't be a dumbas$ while riding whatever you end up with. All PWC riders reflect on all other PWC riders in the eyes of, well, everyone else. One guy being a dink at a beach area can ruin it for the everyone else who wants to ride there. It just takes one Karen complaining long and loud enough to get it all shut down.

Gabe: I vote for you for President!

Wait a minute, did you have a leg up because your Daddy is rich?

No, he set a goal, you exceeded that goal and now you are being rewarded for that hard, smart and resourceful work.

And your Dad is smart enough to recognize and to encourage that in you.

So, do this, buy whatever brand new sit down these guys suggest.

And then tell your Dad / your employer / yourself: "I need you to buy a new 2020 Super Jet 2-stroke standup. What do I need to do to earn what is needed to buy that?"

Keep living at home. Keep your expenses down. Don't get sucked down into the car/truck, insurance, fuel hole. Put some money aside for your first rental property.

BTW, as a professional myself, I will tell you that professionals are the "plumbers" i.e., the technicians for those who actually make things. Make something or provide a physical service that others want. Actual plumbers make more money than professionals in many instances.

And finally, I suggest that you buy a brand new 2020 2-stroke Super Jet now. First. This is their last year. Find one at a dealership and jump on it. You can always buy whatever couch you want later. They will always be making couches. 2-stroke Super Jets, not so much . . .

Good job Kid!
