I'm pleased with the power of my 650 sj but of course it wont be like that forever. New motors are the price of a small car now days :/ I'm buying a truck so it makes it virtually impossible for me to buy one. (im talking blowsion motors) Would it be better to just buy a 701 and bore it out? asside from new bigger pistons would you have to change anything else? say you went to a 760 size?

Power costs money. This isn't a cheap sport.
Get a 701 and some basic bolt on parts (pipe, head, impeller) and slowly work your way up.

Well i know it costs money. But a 380 truck payment is gonna slow my roll a little bit haha. Just looking for a cheaper solution then just buying a complete motor. I guess a pipe would prpbably be a good start.

Buy a $5000 truck instead of a $20,000 truck.

Then spend the rest on gas for the ski.

haha my 3200$ truck i got 4 years ago is on its last limb. I think after she herd that she was getting replaced she threw a fit because the next time i drove her i got pulled over pulling my ski and it was dark out. Had my headlights on, and i couldnt get my dash lights to work. and little did i know i didnt have any tail lights on my truck or trailer working except for blinker and breaks. All fuses are good. So new 2011 dodge it is!

pipe and head are 2 of the best bangs for the buck to make a stock ski ride pretty good.

Since you say you have a 650 just buy a ported 61x top end and throw it in your 6m6 cases with a little grinding here and there and you will have a fun ski.

I ran a season with a ported 61x cylinder on 61x cases, b pipe and a 46mm carb and it ripped great.

Maybe ship your motor off to Group K in the offseason for a little work.

Why?
I've never been impressed with GroupK motor performance. Harry is a nice guy and is good to do business with, but for performance bang for the buck, I'd look elsewhere.

the light problem is easily curable. it is the dash illumination / tail circuit. try replacing the switch in the dash, all light circuits run through it.

Do yourself a favor and never ride any ski with a powerful engine, this way you will have no idea what you are missing, trust me ignorance is bliss. :pokey:

Especially when the old truck is probably repairable for less than $50.

I drool over new trucks everyday too but I have set my sights on making my 2002 dodge last me to 500K. I have 260k on it now and just rebuilt the tranny so I should be good.

depends how you roll
I do 50k + miles per year
my '06 acura RSX is over 200k with no issues
cannot do that with a used car

Why not?
You could buy a 1-2 year old used car with 25k-50k miles on it for thousands less than new . Why couldn't you drive over 200k with it?

My truck came with 120k miles. I put on 140K more in the last 3 yrs and the tranny at 248k was the first major expense. I am doing about 68k miles a year with my current commute. I can afford a new vehicle but don't see the point in miling out a brand new one when this one will do it just fine. I do a ton of maintenance though and do all my own wrenching so I know every inch of my truck so there are no surprises.

I used to always drive new trucks when I was younger but learned early that there was more to life than vehicles. Back in 98, I sold off a 3 yr old truck and paid cash for a beat up old chevy so I could buy my first watercraft and that was the smartest move I ever made.

The trick to buying used vehicles is in the shopping. I test drove over 100 vehicles in 2 months before I purchased my current vehicle. Your decisions change a great deal when you look long term.
