Noob Handlebar Question

I bought a 2004 SXR and decided to tear into it right away and change some stuff before I get out on the water. This is my first stand up (coming from an ultra 150 I've had since 2000) and am pretty excited about it.

First off I purchased some Blowsion bars and ODI grips. I took all the stock pieces off and put the new bars and grips on. Upon securing the stock controls, I noticed both the start/kill switch and the throttle lever have a detent in them that fits into a hole in the stock bars to keep them from rotating.

My question is, am I suppose to cut the "nub" off the stock controls and bolt them down tight and epoxy them? (pain in the ass if I have to take them off or decide to replace them at a future date) OR, do I drill the blowsion bars and silicone the hole when I attach the stock controls? Gonna be a pain in the ass to get the right angle on the bar to make sure they feel comfortable while riding...

Note: no, I do not wanna buy aftermarket controls right now...I just wanna get this thing out on the water, I've plenty of money into it already getting it back to shape from the previous owner.

Thanks guys. I'll prolly have a :):):):)load more questions in another week. Tore the stock mats and rail caps off this week and plan on redoing them with the composites and stitched mats w/ lifters.

Might wanna consider foot holds now while you have the turf up. You will want them later, its not as hard as it sounds, and everyone will tell you to get them.

One of the stock rails is torn in half, hence why I'm replacing them. The other has some pretty good grooves in it...looks like the past owner something sit over the rails while it was in storage during the winter (box/crate etc..) The ski only has just over 15 hrs on it and is an '04, so it basically just sat around and deteriorated in a cold dusty barn.

I don't wanna do footholds (yet) since I'm not sure I'll get much into freestyle at this time (I'm a powerlifter, and at a solid and heavy 5'11"/245 lbs I'm not sure I'm really the template of a freestyler. lol) I would need a HELL of a lotta horsepower to push my ass in a circle through the air. One thing I will say is that this stuff gets expensive real quick with a standup. There's soooo many things you can do to these machines the laundry list is endless...looking forward to it though. Riding a couch is just so one dimensional.

Install footholds now. I broke my pelvis in 2006 because I didn't have footholds in my SX-R.

Just so you know.

Install footholds while you have the turf off. Skip the lifters. Nobody regrets footholds.. They are the best mod you can do.

Ok after thinking about what was said, and realizing how hard getting everything off is, I think I've changed my mind up and decided to do some footholds (Tom21's), and turf it over with regular hydroturf diamond pattern. Saving the $200 on the rail caps and putting it into other areas of the ski.

My question is, when I turf over the rail caps are you guys adding foam padding under the turf? I could see this being a nice bit of safety on the limbs and joints. If so, are u cutting it to fill the voids, or just putting a big pad underneath it? And what thickness of pad is used?

My main concern is figuring out how to make the turf form the same shape as the stock cap to blend into the contours of the hood. I don't want it to look ghetto rigged. I see you guys have done it in pics, just wanna know exactly how its done.

Thanks. When glassing in the footholds, is there any specific thickness I need to be using, or will just a standard glass kit hold up to the stresses the footwell will encounter (I see now that there are some small hairline cracks where the bottom of the tray meets the gunwale)?

You can check out my build thread too. I dont think you need to use 25mm pad though. That seems a bit much. I used the 8mm and with the turf over that, its nice and it doesnt look all out of place and uneven. Im sure useing 25mm pad on the rails would make the the rails seem pretty janky but, to each is their own. I also filled in the holes and gaps from the stock caps with filler...
I also used pieces of the stock foam sides to fill in the gap at the top of the rail where it meets the hood, so it looks flush to the hood when its on. I also used two layers of 8mm in the tray.

Very nice! Thanks for the write up!

I suppose I'll use 8mm pad for the rails then, and 25mm on the tray. I also want to strengthen the tray area for my heft...so I figure I"ll glass some strips across between the holds. Which is preferred for you guys, poly or epoxy resin?
