Noob Questions

I haven't ridden since the 550 came out. Deciding to get back into the fun. I will be riding mostly in the Long Island Sounds initially, and definitely more interested in freestyle than racing however, based on what I read I have a few questions and would love the opinions from the group.

I keep seeing the if you are freestyling it's superjet and racing is the sxr-800. So before I rush out and get a superjet, I wanted to make sure what I read was updated. I am trying to validate the following:

1) Sxr-800 much better in Chop (which the sound gets every afternoon)
2) sxr-800 50lbs heavier
3) SupertJet better bottom end

I have no issues getting some mods for the kawa to make the bottom end better, however I am looking for some recommendations or opinions.

1) I am buying a new 2010/2011
2) I have no issues modding a bit
3) Planned on adding footholds
4) I weigh about 220 lbs

Any help in deciding the best route based on the that data would be great.

if your going new the 08 and newer superjet is not as freestyle friendly as the pre 08. i rode a bone stock 08 and did not like it, compared to my modded 96.it wasn't as playfully. and the handling was something i could get used to, but id rather not.
also rode a slightly modded 08 and it was the same story.

the sxr is great for leisure ridding, carving, cruising handles very well.
it all depends on what you want to do, since you posted your more in to freestyle, get a pre 08 superjet. that is already modded. pipe, msd enhancer or no rev mod to cdi. prop, grate. you will be money a head. and I think you will be happier in the long run.

Thats just my opinion.

i have a 2010 Sxr 800 and I never ride the dam thing i goes real fast and is great when your being lazy, but it aint a superjet. I ride my 1990 squarenose ALOT more (even if it runs much less consistently) I am a little concenred about what weston said about the new superjet (They got one at the dealership here in town, it is taunting me) I been thinking about getting one, but maybe i should skip the step and just go with an aftermarket hull. If your looking to do stunts my personal belief is the sxr is to Fing heavy (but then again mine is perfectly stock; to shiny to mod still; superjet would never exist "stock" i would begin its mods immediately. )
I would love to get more input about the 2008-11 superjet i had been hearing it was better-- better prop, better hull (but mayb thats also its curse? now sxr like) because I know I dont like "freeriding" on the sxr. great for highspeed zero cavitation and turns on a dime kinda does savage submarines until the computer gets confused and the motor dies

buy a built SJ it will save you a lot , i brought a new 2010 and i wont buy a new standard ski again , but saying that its still loads better than the SXR
a mate has a SXR ond 05/06 SJ he never rides the SXR as the SJ is so much more fun .

my wife just started riding stand ups and ilkes the SJ much more than SXR says it more fun to ride , but then again she wants a Rickter now because she thinks they look cool :-}}}

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah that sucks about the new SJ's. I live in CT and the modded skis that I have found thus far are just not in good shape. I am definitely more into freeriding more than just carving. I will continue the search however, being new to this, what mods would you suggest on the SJ? I know i need a bilge pump, foot holds, better hood seals and a strap. I have seen many posts about a wet and dry pipe and modified fly wheels however, I don't want to put the cart before the horse and modify something that won't give me the return without the other items modded. I guess I am looking for a succession of suggested mods. :)

But truly thanks again!!

The hood seal is just fine, I think you mean a new hood. The stock hoods are big and heavy. But if your just getting back into the sport than you wouldnt need that for your first mods. bilge, footholds, msd enhancer, bpipe, prop, and you could use some steering mods. 0 degree bars, and cut down a stock pole.

Shane if your wife gets a Rickter before I do I may cry a little.

Lival the majority of the guys who post on this site are the extreme of extreme. Their advise may not necesarily be best for you. When you say you weight 220lbs then we're thinking SXR, but then you say your more into freestyle we're thinking SJ. Freestyle on here genrally means "Big air on flat water" Your best bet before spending $7-8000 on a new ski is to put forth a little effort to find and ride one of each (an SXR and a SJ) and then YOU decide which one will best suit your needs.

227 Thanks for the feedback on that. At the end of the day you are probably right about giving them both a shot and then choose from there. I think I will however, based on what I am getting for feedback I think the SJ fits the bill better than the SXR, however, it sounds like the getting an 08 stock with low usage and pumping it up would be a bit smarter rather than blowing out a brand new ski. I started my quest for an 08 ski in good shape and will then start modding that.

Everyone thanks for the responses.

I agree with most of what 227 said. And will expand on it. Many here believe they need a 8mm stroker that breathes fire, even though they cannot begin to utilize its full potential. Most need to outgrow their power then move up. The SXR is a great ski for what it does. The 08 does have some drawbacks, the steering setup is not the best, you can either swap the steering cable and pole back to a pre 2008 or there was a guy up near michigan that was making a modified steering setup that was suppose to work really well.

If you get a new SJ. The prop is pretty good that comes on it. Pick up a Factory Pipe (B Pipe), MSD Enhancer, Worx intake grate, 0-Degree Bars. Bilge Pump or install a versaplug. Pole Spring or modify your stocker for more tension. and Footholds. This will give you a good starting point. You can later go to some engine porting, Aftermarket head, larger carbs..........

Look for a Freestyle modded used Superjet unless you can find an SXR with an aftermarket light hull.

For about $6000, you can get one in prestine shape with a BPipe, footholds, aftermarket handlepole and hood, prop and intake grate. If you buy a stocker and start modding it, you will spend about 8 or 9Gs making it the way you want it.

If I was starting over, I would buy a used ski with an aftermarket hull and would skip the SJ and SXR all together. BTW, I love my lightweight TRinity SXR, but spent about 11Gs making it the way I want it.

....or just buy this and be done with it! http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/92134-Rickter-fs2-and-fr2

Definately do yourself a favor and buy a modded sj, I made the mistake of buying a 04 sj with a few little mods like ride plate intake grate pump cone and that was it for $4000 when I couldve bought a cleaner 05 sj with rrp pole bpipe all the expensive goodies beautiful ski nice graphics kit for $5000. RRP alone is like $800 and same for a bpipe...not to mention all the other a/m parts it had...
