Octane Octane Refoam

Pics would be great ! i'm overhauling mine this winter and will be doing this as well.

Just cutting the tray we have learned a ton about the boat.... in other words some things NOT to do....areas not to cut....how NOT to get a foothold to seperate from the foam.....

Yeah...TONS of good to know info. I will post some pics tomorrow.

That would be awesome. I started pulling all the parts out of my hull the other day and pulled the turf from the tray but haven't moved past there yet. I'm pretty aprehensive about cutting into the tray as I'm still pretty new to fiberglass work but I'm pretty excited to get started.

mine 2 lol . cut it up man nothing to worry about. wait untell you see how little foam is in it. mine was half empty!!! the rest was full of water!!

After drilling a 1/4" hole in the bottom left side of the back of the ski and watching around 2 gallons of water pour out......I decided to butcher it up. 58vwragtop came over and brought me a cut off wheel, so we drew out a templete on the tray after I scraped all the turf off. As soon as the saw cut the tray water was flinging off the blade....

I wanted to keep as much of the tray in tact so fiberglassing would be minimal, so we left some runners down the inside. I was supprised how much foam was in the ski to be honest...but it was SOAKED....

Here are some shots of the ski after I did some cleaning. I didn't get pics of the tray with all the foam in it....I just started ripping it all out. After we put the majority of the foam in a bag, I can tell you the bag was around 10-12 lbs. You add that plus the 2 gallons or so of water.....and you get one heavy ass Octane...

Couple of things I would do differently....

1. When we cut the front part of the tray out we cut a little too close to the front. I will be resealing the thru hull brearing...so I needed the housing exposed. It's definetly leaking...But I think I could have sealed it without cutting quite so far towards the front.

2. I cut too far up front on the sides or gunwhales. I actually cut into the bulkhead...:spank:

So the plan it....refoam with BEER PONG BALLS!!! Yeah! Gotta break em in before we put em in the tray though. Going to use some of the good expandable foam to keep the beer pong balls in place...but not too much. I will also use the foam in the gunwhales as well.

how is the old ski. ? i did the left side when i changed the exhaust tube.(it rotted out). pulled the tube out and next to no foam in the hull. drilled the drain plugs in it to let the water out. i was at one point going to cut the tray out and fix it. never got around to do it. the drain plugs let the water out so it never got to heavy. i miss that ski.

It's a 2003. It's definetly been ridden... just needs some tlc...and it will be better than new.

Did you happen to change your carbs out?? I'm trying to figure out a better setup....stockers need to go. Planning on a lightweight charging flywheel, trim nozzle, new rings and the new carbs this winter as well.

i raced it in stock class. stock carbs. i did use a kawasaki ele box to stop from killing cdi's.(kawe box is water tight)a nice set of 46 or 48 would kill on that ski. flywheel would be nice.the stock flywheel is heavy.

The guy that owned this before me had the CDI reprogrammed by Watcon for freestyle, then he sealed it up really well. Just curious, did you use a SXI style box or the SXR? Is there a difference?

I wouldn't be opposed to dropping in a single 48 if I could find a manifold...but at the same time I don't want to loose any top end.

Tell ya what you should do is ripp that eletrical system out and put in a total loss. i run one in my 02, walks away from both my recurved cdi in 02 and 03 octanes.
