Is it just me or are prices on used stuff, or even new but sold in these forums, just WAY over priced.

I thought the general rule of thumb was 1/2 off retail but I have seen some stuff in here that is maybe 10-20% off.

I don't know-----just an observation. But if I was gonna buy something in here that I can get BRAND NEW for another 10 or 20 bones then guess what....I'm buying new.

Sorry all....rant over.:wavey:

It's worth whatever the going rate is.
If the going rate for a B-pipe is 500 bones, you can't expect people to offer them for 300.

1/2 off retail is bull********. (As in, that rarely happens)

Overall I think it's pretty good. The only parts I would completely agree with you on is Aftermarket Girdled Heads and Aftermarket props.

The typical used girdled head is priced at around $250-280 when you can get a brand new one for $320. The same thing goes for props. A used Skat Swirl will bring upwards of $175 when if you shop around enough you can find a brand new one for $200.

Oh and don't get forget bpipes. They easily pull 450 and are usually missing gaskets, couplers, and bolts and you can get a brand new one for $670.

Aside from those parts it seems like you can find some pretty good deals on stuff like cranks, carbs, electrical components, etc. It's just the highly sought after items that go for too much.

Just a Disclaimer: I saw this thread before I saw that other Used Girdled Head For Sale thread.

Don't forget that those used props usually have work done to it (like cutback, polished, repitched, etc)that you will not get with a $200 new prop

Yep and there are some people that if they can save $20-50 by buying a used part they will cuz in the end it all ads up.

I wish I could be that way, but I just can't seeing buying a crusty old used part to save that $20-50 and have it possibly harder to sell down the road.

Agreed. I aint wasting my finger strength on my keyboard to save a little money on a used crusty part. IMO even spotless perfect used parts should be around 1/2 off retail. At least 40% off.

Oh well. At least when I sell stuff in here you can rest assured you will get a good deal.

Very true, but the only thing I can see you really needing to do to a new swirl is get it cutback and I'm pretty sure it's not that hard to have it done. I think there are a few other places out there besides IMPROS that will cut it back for you. Heck I'm sure your local machine shop could probably do it, but then you run the risk of them ruining your new prop.

Why? If it's spotless, it's close to retail in condition. Why should that be half off?
Most of the parts we buy don't have a service life that wears down as time goes on, so slightly used is just as good as a new part.

Because you never know. It is the buyer taking the chance. Make the gamble worth his efforts.

I realize there may be some exceptions. Like I would pretty much buy anything off of Mile 9C1 but his stuff is clean, his rep is killer, and his prices are nearly 1/2 of retail.

Oh and don't get me started on the prices of used ski's. It's the complete opposite. I see built up ski's rarely go for what they should and then I see bone stock pieces of $hit go for a fair price and everyone thinks it's the deal of the century.

Take this blaster for an example(not calling it a POS by the way):

http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/28021

So the guy picks up a bone stock faded 94 blaster with a 61x that turns over for $700 and people think it's the deal of the century.

The sad thing is I see completely built up 96's for $2000 sit for months.

Let's break it down though:

If I were to try and turn that 94 into some of the built up 96's I would have to do the following:

UMI Steering: 300
Bpipe: 500
Prop: 150
Girdled Head: 275
Intake Grate: 75
Ride Plate: 75
MSD Enhancer: 160
Bars, Grips, Throttle: 90

Total: 1625 + 700 = $2325 for a purple faded 94 blaster with a 61x that we aren't even sure runs yet when you could have had a cherry red 96 B1 all built up with a 62t that runs for $2000.

Sometimes I just don't get it. Personally I will never buy another stock ski again unless it's a new 08 Superjet. Buying an already built ski is the way to go IMHO. Also take into account that the prices I quoted for parts were used prices and you have to actaully wait for those used parts to pop up and be the first one to call dibs which is nearly impossible around here with all the whores.

rant off...

Totally agree. I will probably never buy brand new again and I will lose my azz when I go to sell my fairly loaded SJ.

I usually take into account how good of shape the parts are that I'm selling and price accordingly .

If it's in real good condition it starts at about %65 of retail and the price goes down from there based on condition .

I just sold WAB a 61X head for $15 shipped (cost $10 to ship )so I give real good deals too .:bigok:

I think its because most people dont realize how much it will be to upgrade their ski, a perfect example is me, i bought an old square nose to get into the sport put in footwells, did hood mod etc..., and within a month i already bought a rn hull for 500 dollars (what a steal right) started to reinforce it, then once i finally got that together (spending 1500 on converting using the mentality that i should upgrade this, that etc...) once i got it running , i seized my motor, now rebuilding, i bought a b-pipe, girded head, msd enhancer.not to mention new gaskets and all the other expenses, and just a couple of weeks ago i saw a sweet rn with better paint and better everything for 3500.......at the same time my ski probably has 5 grand in it........

heck, its still better then spending 25 grand for a wammer ski though.....not to mention i now know a lot more about my sj

thants my spiel for ya

New vs. used. It's a tough call. With new you will probably have the option to return the part if it is defective. Used maybe maybe not have the option to return. I would rather spend a few extra dollars for a sure thing. Guess I'm not much into gambling. A ski is expensive enough that if I can't afford a few extra dollars on a part I probably should not have the ski in the first place. Though MadMat is right most of the used parts are not worth my time or effort when I can just spend a few extra dollars and get the same thing new with a good return policy.

I bought a new ski and I'm having a lot of fun "building" it for surf. Sure it's gonna cost me more but I'm having fun with it even when not riding. After this first ski I'll probably only buy used but this is only because I know what to look for in a used machine due to all my time spent building with a new one.

nobody take this personal(i may be guilty of this as well) but, this is one of the reasons progress of companies in this sport and this sport is so slow. A lot of people cheap out and buy used. e.g. The reason why nobody can get a B-pipe for cheaper than $700 new anymore is (not even dealers can't get cost on them anymore they're same price no matter who you go through) is because no one buys them new anymore. Just as an example and comparison, I go to a motocross race(one of the hundreds that happen every weekend around the country) and half the four-strokes there have brand new exhaust systems on them, a brand new exhaust for a four stroke runs anywhere between $700-$1300 and there is barely a market for used parts for bikes everyone buys new; and look how BIG motocross is.

Buy new and support your sport!
