Freestyle PVC Beach Cart

I'd be lost without the x
I'm looking to build a nice cheap PVC beach cart. The only thing I'm stuck on is how I should do the axle bit.

Does anybody have any advice for mounting an axle inside 2" PVC piping? I'm going to be using 18" turf wheels with a 1" bore. What are people using for axles for carts?

Thanks for the help.

I've been using PVC shop stands for a coupe years and they have been fine. It won't be that expensive to put together and if anything breaks it is easily fixable.

If I rig one up I'll post the details here.

Thanks for the advice, I just don't want to spend $500+ for a beach cart.

IMO, and from my experience, you'll spend as much time and money jacking with that PVC as you will trying to find a used aluminum cart and stand.

I found a used cart for $250 on CL locally.

Hell, if you're feeling crafty, buy some aluminum, mock it up and have someone tig it together.

Just my $.02, If you pursue the PVC option I hope it works!

i used 3 inch PVC pipe and fittings and for about 140 i built a cart that will hold my x2 and me on it jumping around. this is the cart i use on the beach. i used threaded 5/8s bar with locking nuts as the axle and used 8 cart tires for harbor freight that were 6 dollars a piece. used carpet for the top for my skis and then used my threaded bar to support the top railing from the bottom so it doesn't sag took me about 3 hours to build. im post pics in about an hour

GEO man get your ski in the water and stop by my place i have an aluminum one in my back yard now and i'm making another one so throw me the cash for metal and ill make you one!

Looks like the 10" tires.

I have these on a wooden cart, all plastic rim with bushing so no rust issues.

As far as PVC, they can work if you build it right and are careful loading, etc. over a period of time. I had one for 3/4 years of use and (see avatar) it worked good for its purpose. But after time PVC becomes brittle from the elements and glue breaks down and it your not careful it's gonna give.

Is it worth the risk to damage your hull from falling off a broken cart or having it land on your foot? IMO no so I upgraded when I had the opportunity.

built a 3" pvc dock over the weekend for my ski.. got tired of the rocks on my "beach" chewing the crap out of the hull

I've gone through 3 of those before I got tired of hauling/ fixing them. Be careful of the flange/ edges of the 90s don't scratch up your hull as bad or worse than the beach. Try some thick carpet and sand / grind down he sharp edges.

I finally pony'd up for the OCD sicssor stand. Money well spent IMO, easy to load/ pack and it will never break.

Harbor freight lawn mower tires?

And did you take those photo's with your GoPro or something...? lol

yes and yes all i own is a go pro hero 2

i do use to pieces of carpet to protect my bottom also i don't use glue just screws. also i added extra support to mine. and if i need more tire surface to roll on softer sand than what i go to, then there is more space to add more tires

thought about that.. noticed some scuffing on the pvc already. will bring some carpet with me next time.

i'll never haul it anywhere though so time will tell. hope it lasts the season.

A strip of turf on each tube keeps the ski from sliding off and doesn't hold water like carpet.

OCD makes nice stands however we leave our PVC stands on the beach while we ride, if it were a nice OCD stand it would probably be taken while were out on the water.

I did the same. I first lightly sanded the elbow flanges to remove sharp edges then use small strips of turf. This will keep from marring the bottom of the ski and also help hold the ski on the stand. I would not recommend turfing the entire PVC stand as it can be a pain to pull the ski off the stand if you do so. I use the stand to unload and load my ski at the ramp. I then drag it to the other side and leave it until I am ready to load up. Only reason someone would take the stand is because they think it is garbage.

special fx is actually my inspiration for this. That is exactly what I want to put together.
