I don't want to junk up this build thread to much but is gelcoat still superior to paint if applied post layup?

well thats why i asked... the video had white and your link had... not white. so i was wondering if there was more.

well go with the purchasing link, and not the instructional. :)

Gel coat is durable but I would think rolling anything on would leave a finish thats less than desirable.

I havent ruled out spraying yet. I know spraying would be a nicer finish. So I may do a test, like roll the gel coat on the painted part of the seat or something and see how that turns out.

As long as the surface is properly sanded and cleaned of all wax and residue gel coat should stick just as well as if it was applied during the layup procedure. the only thing when applying gel coat to an exterior part is that a wax additive needs to be added, this additive creates an air barrier that will allow the gel coat to properly cure and provide that hard durable finish.

You are correct rolling anything on isn't the best for appearance but if thinned properly and given the right temps, gel coat should “flow” out enough to allow for a pretty smooth finish when rolled, however it would still be best to wet sand and rub out the finish after wards to provide the super smooth and straight finish.

I completely agree, its just the wet sanding and rubbing out that I personally would rather avoid and just spray something.

I am looking at doing a roll on paint job for my sj, and the local industrial paint store recommends "Light Industrial Coatings. It is roll on, smooths out perfectly, and is tough as nails from what the people at the store where telling me. Comes in about 50 different colors too.

Questions:

1. I see alot of guys running what looks like regular Motocross bars, opinions on bars please:

/QUOTE]

I have fly racing quad bars on my b1. I'm about 5'4" and they are comfortable for cruising and such because they have a slight back sweep to them and are not straight. But I noticed when I'm running buoys the back sweep is uncomfortable on tight corners. But I think just about anything is an improvement over the stock bars in my opinion.

Still undecided on painting. Rolling on Gel coat is looking more expensive then automotive paint once you add in the UV protection etc... My main problem is the weather, my garage is insulated but not heated. So doing any paint work out there is kinda of a problem. If i were to do a topside roll on paint, i may be able to get away with doing it in the basement (key word MAY).

Little update: got a good deal on automotive paint from a shop that painted a truck for me before. Most likely dropping it off soon. Two stage auto one color.....

Also got the dual cooling set up and ordered some parts. Really just down to the paint, then graphics, turf, seat cover, etc. But I need warmer weather!

well now I talked to them about dropping it off and they said they dont want it for atleast a month. We still have plenty of time but that kind sucks and depending on how long they would have it then could become close to spring. So might go back to the drawing board....

We have found a wrap we like. So I am going to topside paint it (roll and tip), since the wrap doesnt cover everything. Waiting for warmer weather though.

So thinking about ditching the pump dump exhaust for a rear exit, is it worth the $100?

I just seen a post for a 701 rear exhaust for $80 plus shipping. Either here or pwctoday.
