Custom/Hybrid Registering an after market hull

Wondering how you guys are registering all these fancy new after market hulls coming out? What happens if you you don't have vin or paperwork off of used ski. Or do these hulls like the rickter or the Bob or watercraft factory come with their own paperwork?

It was a pain in Ohio (at least the first time). Make sure you have all of your info for where you bought your cases/motor.

they have a bill of sale and a hull number in the case of the bobs. ad in a certificate of origin and i don't see why it is a problem to register. for example hull id #14 made for " jsmith#14" so why would it not be hull jsmith14 ?

Maybe it just depends on who you get but in Ohio they are giving you a custom HIN plate from the State of Ohio....and they don't just like handing those out it seems.

Although by the time Korn got his Trinity they seemed to know a little bit more about how to handle it.

They basically come to your house...measure length and width....check all of your motor #'s.....bust your balls about all the chit hulls/motor parts laying around your garage...

They didn't bust my balls in GA. I told them I was a watercraft nut and it was an expensive aftermarket hull for doing tricks. I told them my motor was aftermarket too. The guy was actually interested and thought it was cool.

You need to have receipts for the materials used to build the hull. Take that to DOL (where you usuall register boats/cars) and they'll issue you a HIN & title on the spot.

so should the A/M builders put a materials list in the final recipt? just because they are not a major manufacturer why should they have to jump through hoops?

Because it helps them sell hulls?
IMHO, the hull should come with a HIN. Having to get one is a hoop for the customer to jump through.

For what it's worth, I don't necessarily fault the smaller hull makers for this. But bigger operations like RRP or WDK should have HIN's at purchase time. (maybe WDK does, not sure)

I may be wrong but a HIN usually contains all the details of the completed boat so guys building and selling hulls are exempt. Guys building complete skis can apply and recieve a boat builders license and are allowed to issue a series of HIN's licensed to them for that purpose. This is the info i found when trying to register my Matrix.

The process was fairly simple in SC although it took some time to get approved while the processor tracked down rules on the subject. They had to contact the coast guard to find out that hull builders are different than boat builders.

I sent in a bill of materials provided by Trinity, pictures of my completed ski, applicable fees and a brief write up of the project. I included the numbers off the donor ski and left it vague on what parts were swapping over, avoided the whole motor sn# thing. All in all it cost me $230 and 8 weeks to process. They issued me a HIN number to get plates made up with. I used the Lamacoid maker at work to make my own plates which i epoxied onto the hull in the appropriate spots.

Hope this helps.

This pertains to Washington state riders

I have been thinking about this for a bit. What about paying the use tax? How would you go about figuring this out? If you use say a 1996 super jet title to they figure your tax off of this hull? What happens if you have an old crappy 550? I'm confused.

What about it?
If you buy a 1996 Superjet, you will pay sales tax (errrm, "use" tax) on the purchase amount.
If you buy an old crappy 550, you will pay the same rate tax on that purchase amount.
The letter I got from Olympia didn't say anything about use tax for the homebuilt VIN.
(Logic would dictate that any materials used to build the hull already had taxes paid on them. But the state wouldn't miss a perfectly good opportunity to get their taxes twice! They do it on used vehicles/boats all the time)

If you "use" a title from another hull, you will present the DOL with that title and the bill of sale. Tax gets figured from the purchase amount.
I imagine that they will charge a similar tax rate on the materials used for the homebuilt. They are pretty adamant about bringing receipts and bills of material. Hummm, it might be cheaper to call my SF a 440.

They make you fill out a form where you're asked if the vessel you bought was in good, ready-to-go condition or needed work.
For a hull only, the choice is obvious (and I've never been questioned on it).

If you choose option 1, they will look up the appropriate retail value and will tax you based on that IF your purchase price is off by more than some predetermined amount.
