Custom/Hybrid Registration for a custom hull in california. What is the trick

I have a used ROK hull I am trying to get registered through the good ol DMV. They are telling me they need a cert of oragin that I dont have. I filled out the dmv form boat 101 that did not work. Anyone done this before in california. Is there a easier way or loophole here?

Thanks

You don't need a certificate of origin.
You want to register a home-built hull. You will need a bill of materials and perhaps photographs.

Have them inspect it for a home built title. Tell them you made it. Not sure how California works.

The homebuilt thing is federal. Implementation is up to states and may differ somewhat, but it's ultimately a federal issue.

Are you sure about CA Matt? In TX and AZ the hull must be present for inspection, IDK about CA. Friend just did it for ROKR in AZ with paperwork from WDK website,it was a breeze, but hull had to be inspected. Fish and Game is the dept. you deal with in TX

I'm pretty certain that it's not required in CA because I personally know of a few people that have registered without the hull present.

  • This is straight from the CA dmv website and the same thing my local DMV told me to do.
  • A completed Application for Title or Registration.
  • A filled-out Statement of Construction.
  • Proof-of-ownership documents, like receipts and bills of sale. A motor vehicle bond will be required if proof of ownership cannot be obtained for parts valued at $5,000 or more.
  • A vehicle verification done by the California Highway Patrol. Make your DMV registration appointment before scheduling the CHP vehicle verification.

When you list materials used to build the hull, they'll try and tax anything and everything you don't have a bill of sale for where tax was already paid. Just be ready for that. So if you built your boat with $1000 worth of material, I'm sure they'll want at least $100.

This is accurate information - for private and commercial motor vehicles, motorcycles, off-road vehicles, and trailer coaches.
This is not the right form for custom hulls. It is not vessels (i.e., boats, pwc, etc)

Depends on how you write the bill of materials. Hypothetically speaking, if one were to produce a bill of materials with official letterhead from some vendor that shows sales taxes were already paid, then no more taxes would be due.

Hypothetically speaking, of course.

I just registered my Rickter Evo as Homebuilt in the DMV in Vista California show them receipts of the fiberglass and materials and they taxed me on the amount it cost to "build it" Myself. I let them know that I brought the driveline from an old registered super jet so they didn't try to do omissions on my motor.

its not required to bring your ski. register it as a home built title. easy peasy.

This is the contradictive stupidity that we deal with in CA. You can't register a new Super Jet, but for $35 you can register a home built with the exact same motor! I'm not complaining here, I love loop holes, it just makes me shake my head and laugh at how this state is run though
