Custom/Hybrid Registration for a custom hull in california. What is the trick

This is the contradictive stupidity that we deal with in CA. You can't register a new Super Jet, but for $35 you can register a home built with the exact same motor! I'm not complaining here, I love loop holes, it just makes me shake my head and laugh at how this state is run though

Pretty sure the intended effect of the legislation is to stop OEM's from selling new 2-strokes in the state. The handful of homebuilt standups you get per year are a drop in the bucket and not worth the special legislation it would require.
Don't consider it "contradictive stupidity" - you're just a very small loophole in a very small niche sport. Be glad nobody is looking your way.

Yet.

You don't need to bring it in for inspection. In California

A) Fill out a California DMV Boat 101 form

http://apps.dmv.ca.gov/forms/boat/boat101.pdf

B) Fill out California DMV Statement of Facts (Section G)

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg256.pdf

I wrote, "I bought a Rickter Hull kit where I had to assemble the craft to bring it to it's current state".

I also brought in an invoice I made saying "Rickter Hull $X,XXX" then IF YOU WANT add a second line to your invoice saying you paid CA state Tax. Just multiply against your areas tax rate. If you don't show you paid taxes, they will make you pay tax on it there.

C) Bring in some sort of watercraft registration saying you will be using that engine in this craft. By Showing registration it shows that engine meets CA State emission standards. This fulfills section 6 of Boats 101 form.

Of course modify your answers to your situations. It took about 20 minutes once I got got to the counter and ~$30.

If you have questions PM me and Ill call you.

***EDIT (Additional INFO)***

The $30 gets you same day registration and tags. It took about a week for the title to arrive, it was just sent standard mail from DMV HQ in Sacramento.

You will will be assigned a HIN, you need to go out and get a Plate made and attach it to the hull yourself. You can go to a Trophy shop or a Pet Store (Petco) and have them make one for you. You don't have to have it made on a dog bone ;) There are a lot of clean looking tags you can use. They look great!

I went to the DMV today and this time told them I built the ski. It was easy. I had a recept for fiberglass from a local body shop. Only cost $130 including tax.

You are correct, it's probably not an HIN. I didn't know the full history of the hull identification number I figured it just had to be unique issued by the manufacture. Must just be a way for crash industries to track their hulls

might be smart to not register the hull in CA under the name "rickter" or "krash" since some guys are getting tax bills right now for $25k + with those names on their titles. Register it as "homebuilt crapper ."

LOL really? Damn that sucks.

I saw Stanton got that.... WTF?

I said the value was a lot less, I'd never tell the Gov I owned a $15K plus ski. It'd be interesting to hear more about it, never seen anything like that before.

LOL I just read up on that. I am really curious how CA is assessing the values of those skis. What are they using? They don't know what aftermarket hull is made where or how much it costs. And even if they do, that's only a fraction of the total boat cost. There's a big difference between a 701 glass FR like Stanton's and a carbon Ninja with a DASA 1200. How do they determine that? And how will it hold up in a court of law?

NEVADA
DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE NOT DMV
- SKI MUST BE PRESENT ( quick inspections, you could bring a superjet and they wouldn't know )
- RECEIPTS AND PICTURES of the build
- $ 20 Title $ 20 Reg $ 10 Muscle paranoia....done

Would not of been hard for them to do that to me in Tx since I presented my ins with itemized replacement list for my Trinity. Maybe thats how?

In a sense they are still relying on values provided by the owner without any reference to back it up. That doesn't make much sense.
To be fair, when I did the bill of materials for my Freak a couple of years ago, I did it for ~$900. They didn't care. Just wanted sales/use tax on that amount. That's the only reason they wanted the bill of materials to begin with.

Yeah, no. I printed up the hull I had from the Trinity page,DASA page,Boyesen, Novi etc. I did'nt want them to give me the jimmy jam if something happened to that ski. If you are concerned about potential loss I beleive youre better off in the long run with actual values. I don't like paying the taxes either, but thats just me. Glad the OP was able to take care of it,unfortunate the sunshine state is coming after guys for taxes but that really shouldnt be a surprise.

In case cali dmv is reading this, my rickter was only $1500... :)

Btw...i registered mine as a 2013 Rickter. Rickters come with a 'hin' like looking piece as well. Dmv told me I could use that set of numbers provided by rickter but i actually made my own up, they never said anything about issuing me one. Kinda funny what my hin is on the title. Obviously not going to post it exactly but its basically says the maker followed by my dry weight of the hull and some 0's and my birthday. I was laughing on my wayout. I paid under 80 bucks for two year tags, they didnt want to see the ski, and i was in and out in 30 minutes.

Its all about which of the employees is in a better chity mood than the rest. I had more troubles registiring a rn than this go around with an A/M hull lol.
