Custom/Hybrid Rickter XFR vs Superfreak Titan -9

I am building a ski from the ground up and need some help deciding what hull to go with. I am trying to decide between a Rickter XFR and a Superfreak Titan -9. Carbon is too expensive so it will be a glass hull. Engine will be 900-1100 cc. Probably DASA or True Performance. Decide that one later.

Riding style. I am looking to get into a ski that can do backflips, rolls, 360, etc. But I also want a ski that I can do boat chasing and a little lake cruising. This thing has to be able to run around on plane, not just plow and flip. I will probably take it in the surf a little but not much. If I had to weigh them, freestyle is more important. Maybe 70/30.

I had a XFR owner suggest the xfr with a long ride plate and mount the engine 2" forward to get more of that freeride balance in the short hull. I am a little worried about the short tray not having enough front foot room. The freak has more room in the tray, but that comes at a price. Probably tougher to get crazy with.

I know I should ride them both but, being in the northwest, they are hard to find.

Please, I need you favorites and why.

^^good post. Im kinda in the same boat (no pun intended). i always have liked rickter but just tried a SF badass and loved that too. I see what you mean about the tray on the superfreaks even tho i haven't seen a titan hull in person. Best bet would be to get to a freeride or WF. Im hoping for WF to help me decide what id like to you. Im sure if your around 1000cc theres not going to be much problem doing tricks on either hull. Maybe somebody with one or both of these skis will chime in because i am interested as well.

didnt know there ws such think as a SF Titan, geeze I am so behind the times LOL.
I would not go Rickter unless you can afford carbon though, heavy heavy heavy.

seems to defete the purpose buying a short hull and making it a long one. IMO you will get used to it short and be fine my -8.5 SF Badass is a good freeride or freestyle hull except in really bad high chop areas.

I spoke with Chris at Thrust this morning and got some good info from him. Titan is the new name for the glass Badass. A more polite name I guess. He said that they are going to have a Titan -9 with the DASA 1100 demo ski at Havasu. Wish I could ride that but don't think I can get there.

With the kind of money you're going to end up dropping on a new hull, even if it is glass, you should really try to get out to a freeride of some sort if you can't make it to WF. The Daytona freeride is happening in mid January if that would fit your schedule and travel budget better. There will be just as many exotic ski's there to test out I hear.

You for sure need to make it to finals or somewhere to demo everything...the Monday after finals is a great demo day...

Why Discount a Backy Chan, why limmit yourself to these 2? The backy chan I rode seemed stable but light and short, isnt this what your after? You can get carbon lightweight for glass pricing in a CHAN, hard to discard it IMO. I would say the only issue is the unknown on longevity. But they seem to be making huge strides in the short time they have been producing so the gamble seems less now than ever to me. Not non existand but it is also not non existant on a glass freak as they have a bad rep currently and just changed hands to a new producer with (to my knowledge) no history in hull making or at least not with this hull.

Rickters have longevity on their side but the weight for flatwater is just too much for me to overcome.

I would agree with all. Ride before you buy. I road a xfs with 865 and it was fun and stable but far too short to enjoy any kinda boat chase or rec riding. That's the problem with all these really short hulls. It's great for still flat water and just flipping infront the dock. And anyone into that knows you need a 1000cc min. ( for a average rider ) I think your real question is what exactly are you going to mainly ride? You said mostly flatwater. But that might change. Personally I'd do a 850 xfs-r ( larger trey ) equipped with long plate and go chase boats and flip easy without spending large money on a 1000cc setup specially if your still wanting to rec ride. And Rickter quality, Rrp parts, are all mass available and top notch. They are heavier but skill level will get you past that. Look at all the titles Rickter riders bring home! ( bias opinion from Rickter rider too lol )

Ride before you buy. I did and thats why I bought a Superfreak. I rode pretty much everything(at the time) and it was by FAR my favorite.
With as much money as you are spending it's worth making sure you are buying the right one.

Also might wanna check into a EME aeriel8...we have one and a micro. The aeriel8 is the wifes...its a awesome ski easy to ride...rolls are easy...flips would be if we had the trim on it yet... its awesome for chasing boats...I would surf ride it too... if u make it this direction any time soon or to the finals you can try it...

there is a big problem with the ride before you buy theory. every hull acts totally different depending on the drive train thats in it. mag pumps are a huge handling plus. big power gets you out of trouble before you get into it. just saying, the way a boat acts when you test it, doesnt mean its going to ride the same with your drive train choice in it. i've ridden a lot of skis that should have rode the same and were very different.

I agree to some degree. However, I have probably ridden 10 different Badass hulls now and every single one felt like home to me and felt a lot like mine. Some were shorter and set up totally different, some were glass, some had 1000 CC and yet they all were very similar at the same time. Handle pole length is the only thing that throws me off a little.
