Blaster Rocker and Shorty quickie

def chop the back! its a more substantial gain than the whole nose rocker job! it creates tons of steering leverage on top of being easier to rotate around on flips/rolls. if you were to cut the hull-7 and rocker the nose you still have 15% more surface area than a superjet so its not going to make the ski feel like its plowing or lagging from reducing its footprint. i make composite rideplates for shorties too $100. I usually just glass in a long piece of 3/8' thick aluminum to replace the ride plate nuts you will loose. once you are all glassed up then you can just drill and tap anywhere on that 3/8" piece of aluminum you glassed in. The stock gas tank will work if you decide to reinstall the oem style mounts. I think its more trouble than its worth and its easier to just install a smaller gas tank that uses rubber straps like a superjet. Also its quite simple to just glass in chunks of aluminum and drill/tap them for strap hardware. superjet, 550sx, 750sxi, etc. gas tanks fit pretty well and are a little less bulky than oem blaster tanks. i got many to choose from if you need one. next chop your seat :)

Thanks Carter, I will be in touch as this moves forward. I am working on this as I have time during the day but have been really busy lately. I hope to get some work done on it today.

No Sir, I am building a 1100 Blaster and a 1100 SXR as we speak. Just to make it a odd number I threw in another project play Blaster! I am going to have fun in sport class this year and will sit out on Pro Runabout until the powers to be can get their heads on straight. Things are out of control on the cost side of runabout and I am not going to drive across the country to race 3 other guys. So back to sport and ski it is, hey that is where I started racing anyway! I have my own race team working their way up to legal age, although they are way off at this point. My Girl runs to the skis in the garage wanting on them as soon as I open the door, I'm probably in trouble. How have you been Harrison? Long time no see!

Back to where the fun is!!!!! I hear that.

We good, just doing the Daddy thing. I was in your neck of the woods back in late November. Izzy and I drove over to Madison to pick up a Hobie 16. Wanted something with no motor!!!!!!!!! Plus I can take the wife and little girl out on this!!!!!! I passed by a ServPro shop, made me wonder if it was one of yours. Basically down the road from Davids house.

man this thread just made my day. i'm at about the same stage as you and your questions were along the same lines as the ones i was coming up with.

can't wait to see the outcome of all these up and coming rockered chopped blasters!

Not mine, I sold all of my Servpro Franchises back in 08. Dealing with those people was making me miserable, all they did was hold me back. I am a real estate broker and commercial Ins agent, I also have been doing some work at our lumber company's sales office. Just staying really busy. You should have called we could have grabbed lunch if I was home, I was in Phoenix doing Ironman Arizona in mid-November.

We got there around 1 or so, picked up the boat, that took forever, kid did not have it tied down real well, had to do all of that, one hub was missing bearing housing cap, stopped by Davids to see if he had one and to say Hi, then hit Walmart up and Academy until I found one, it was well after dark by the time I got trailer fixed!!!!!!!!!!! Other wise I would have tried.

Only had 1 hour to work today so here is the progress. Spent most of the time removing the matt. I only made the cut to flush the back end. If you remove the bond flange in one piece you can use is as a template for your cut line on the top deck. All of the marks are 3.5" and I marked a lateral line from the pump cavity giving the begin point for the taper.

Ok so quickie.... Chopping the rear. Straight cut across the back vs the oem curved rear?

Lots of skis are straight... The blaster is curved. Is the extra work involved in keeping the curve worth it? Or would a straight cut be just as effective in the surf?

Opinions! Go!

There is no more work to keeping the curve and most I have seen stick with it. Cut the back end flush as shown, just watch from the bottom side and stay tight to the hull. Next you just measure 3.5" from each point straight forward on the ski. Make your marks then use the bond flange as a template to connect your dots. Easy..... I guess it would be easier to just use a yard stick and draw a line across but in all honesty starting with a stripped boat I probably have only 2.5 hours of work into this so far, thus its called the quickie!

the hull i got already had the bond rail cut flush so i didn't have teh templace and a circular saw seemed to be a pretty effortless way to make a straight cut.... that's the reason i cut mine straight... just figured that was about as easy as it gets but then i saw yours and a few others and started to rethink my cut hehe

Billy you should talk to Zimmy first. He is one of only two or so people who have backflipped a blaster. Zimmy backied his 650 b-pipe blaster too. With his 828 p/v'd blaster he backflips off of 3ft. waves. He believes that the rockered nose has the biggest influence. You should contact him if you want the inside on a blaster surf hull.

Thanks, I will give him a shout. At this point though I'm pretty committed on the rear chop. The Aussies seem to have alot of these done and most are shortened so I feel that the short hull will be ok. My main concern at this point is deciding on whether to run a 1100 or the 785 superstock engine from my superjet? The 1100 settup is approx 30lbs heavier but with the removed fiberglass this weight should be compensated for somewhat, but just like racing the freestyle guys like lighter so I am kind of at a loss as which engine to use. Both engines would be strong but the 1100 would be pump gas and more reliable.

I have both a heavy eng and a light eng in a b1 ,IMO The blaster is heavy enough as it is and I say dump the extra weight and stay with the 785 for surf riding ......... I have a 66e ""GP800"" in my other blaster and I can feel the weight difference in the surf and do not prefer it in rough water riding . I am all for trimming weight wherever it can be done in the surf .. Think :Why do all the surf standup's want a light hull and spend THOUSANDS to get one . as far as reliabiliy , Im running 200PSI in my eng and reliability is not a concern . 99.9 % of all failures are from overlooked and under prepared issues that should of been resolved before launching the ski or in the off season , at least from what I have seen on the beach ! again this is just from my personal experiences . Im no pro . '' stay light. if you want the xtra weight just shovel in some sand and ride !. ''

After speaking with Zimmy I am having 2nd thoughts about the taper on the bottom of the hull. Currently I am looking at around 85" total length on the ski. Although the length will not change the taper would have a effect on drop off in which a longer plate could correct. I have briefly touched on this already but is there anyone that has ridden a chopped Blaster with the rear taper and one with a flat rear for comparison?

I chopped 3.5" off the back of my B1 hull following the factory lines exactly like you did and loved it! The only thing I did different was leave the top deck overhanging like 2" or so just to have a larger platform area for quick side mounts in surf. I also used that overhang to bond my fiberglass to when re-glassing the rear and was able to use the overhang lip for a bow eye. You're already beyond that option but I just wanted to say I did the same exact lines as you with the -3.5" and it really loosened up the ski which was great. I wouldn't angle the back additionally but that's just my opinion. My only negative feedback for the -3.5" chop is how vulnerable the nozzles become when shallow riding on a sandbar. My next B1 build may have less negative chop just for nozzle protection but shape the chines and the back differently to loosen it up for the same effect. My other more time consuming option would be to chop 3" off the back including the whole pump tunnel and move the whole thing forward and use a SJ driveshaft. This would give the same effect off the shortened hull but with protected nozzles and also puts the steering pivot further forward on the hull which should make steering input even faster. A rockered nose is important too but as Carter said it depends on what size surf you ride in and what type of riding you do. The steeper the rocker and the higher up you go on the hull with the nose rocker will affect its characteristics and resistance to pearling but will also make the ski want to rotate when hitting a wave straight on... Just something to think about if you don't plan on backflipping or dropping into a steep wave face while riding surf
