trying to freshen up my motor this winter and the cases, block and head are stuck (exhaust mani was stuck). I'm going to try using some heat, but was just wondering if there is any process behind using heat. I don't have a heat gun but I have a propane torch. Do i just hold it on the stud area for a few seconds and go around to each stud? Any advice and methods would be appreciated. When putting everything back together do people use loctite or a water resistant grease?

Alot of salt water guys, myself included, are using a Lucas Oil product called "Red and Tacky #2". It is a thick red grease that contains anti sieze. I smear it on everything that will ever need to come apart.

Ok thanks, I'll get pics up in a bit. Has anyone every tried undoing all bolts putting the spark plugs in and then turning the engine over? Or attaching a slide hammer to the spark plug holes. Probably won't be keeping the current stock head anyway

the turning the engine over trick might work for you... get those pics up before you try anything to get yourself in the rookie moves thread though.

There are some tricks to getting salty stuff apart. There are also ways to make a 75 pound pile of two cylinder scrap.

wow...that looks like my SN 650 that had sat for 15 years after being sunk in saltwater. Things will be very fragile so don't over-do it.

Just throw that kawi 650 in the trash. Problem solved. JK. I had the same problem with the same motor. Try to put some rope down the cylinder and compress it with a pry bar in the coupler teeth.

o, good call on the rope idea. I figure if i can get the block off with the head on still, ill be in good shape. Cause i can just hammer the head out. I could even put rope down the cylinder tie a knot through the exhaust and then use that to tug on. i would love to trash it, but i need it for one more summer. Next year at this time hopefully ill have a rn sj, or something with a 701 in it.

Ive been in that situation before. Looks like it might be a lost cause if you can't get it to budge already. To be completely honest with you, It might be better to try and find a used, running 650 motor before you go through the trouble of trying to freshen that one up.

Try this stuff called KROIL.
We use it at work for stuck bolts on our cooling tower pumps with anti corrosion chemical on them and it frees them up. Gotta spray it every couple hours for a day or so then try it again. Be careful with the heat after that as it will go on fire.

Ok, thanks. Im in the process of figuring out what and where to order everything for my winter project so ill throw that on the list. And no its not barnacles although i wouldn't be surprised if i came along a couple. It's just completely rusted out. Needs to be wire brushed and painted.

Spray everything with corrosionX or kroil and wait awhile, longer the better and you should have some better luck.

Ok thanks I'll give it a try. This is off topic to my original question. But I'm going to get a bore and new pistons. Should I bore .25 or 1 mm? And I know I need a head gasket which matches the bore but does the head need to be adjusted at all?

so after using some penetrating oil every couple hours for 5 days, spent the last 2 days working on the ski and trying to get the engine apart. Rope down the plug holes, bent a bunch of re-bar, then switched to a pry bar broke 2 coupler teeth. next i put the plugs back in, and turned it over with starter...nothing. Flipped the engine on its side put the pry bar against the bottom of the pry notches on the head and started wacking it with a 5 pound hammer then a 10 pound sledge....nothing. used heat along the way, didn't do anything but but start a couple fires. Finally hooked up a slide hammer through the plug holes and still nothing. next step, find a used engine. And take what I can off this junk one. Used engine will be taken apart and everything will be put back together using red and tacky #2...

It's like the thing was welded together, i could even hammer a metal chisel between the head and block
