Surfriding ScottS wide bond rail, -2, lowered tray SJ mods

After riding a few aftermarket skis and then buying a Matrix (wonderful handling surf ski), I decided it was time to improve the handleing of my back-up ski, a 98 SJ. I decided to wided the bond rails, replace the wet foam, while in there I would shorten the hull 2" and lower the tray.

I started by cutting the bond lip off where it turned down almost to the front of the ski. I notched polystyrene foam to fit flush with the top of the bond rail and bolted through it to a piece of scrap wood molding to hold it tight to the botom of the rail.

What does this mod do exactly, what are the benefits ?

The wide bond rails really make a big difference in the stability, especially in the white water. Guys that have ridden it say the mod makes the ski feel lighter (until they help carry it out of the water) when riding. It's much easier to ride and less tiring. You won't believe the difference in the surf.

I'm real excited to watch this thread. The 2 things I 'd be a little worried about is the blending of the bond line and how well it will hold up over time.

I helped carry that heavy pig down to the water so I was very amazed to finally ride it. The wider rails give the ski more "lift" and it floats like it rides on top of the water rather than in it. Combined with the shortened hull it turns on a dime and makes for a very smooth and fun ride. If you didn't know, you would swear you were riding a lightweight hull.

Turned it over, un-bolted the wood holding the foam in place, removed the foam and cut the screws off that went thru the bond rail to hold the foam in place. Since I left the original horizonal portion of the bond rail, I layed two layers of 1208 biax from the end of the original rail out to the end of the new extension to make it the same thickness.

Then I ran three more layers from the hull out to the underside end of the new rail extension. By laying biax first on the top of the original bond rail, letting it cure and then turning it over and laying biax on the underside of the original rail, this sandwitching of the original rail made it super strong.

Once the foam was cleaned out and the area that was cut shorter was ground clean to accept the new glass, I cut out some plastic from a face shield and duct taped it over the ends to use as a form.
