I haven't posted anything on how I like the new ride because the surf has really sucked lately until this weakend. I don't want to be one of those guys who tell you how great their new ski is when they haven't really spent time on it. It takes riding in all kind of conditions to get a true opinion of it's handling.
The first two rides, the surf was super choppy and shin slappers for waves, this week was a little rough and knee to waist high surf. The water was so cold, I tried hard not to get wet, but I did get a better feel for the Matrix. I can't wait for one of those smooth, chest to overhead summer days.
Each time I have ridden it, I have had all my buddies (SJ, SJ w/ tubbies, Wamiltons SXR, standard length Matrix and a -4 square nose with tubbies) to trade rdes with, so I'm getting a good comparison.
The first time I rode it I had a full length w/ d-cut ride plate (ski is -2") on a real choppy day with small surf. It was easy to ride but it did not carve like my friends SJ with tubbies. I spun a prop off before I could try some setups, I thought it was OK, but was liking the SJ.
Next time I rode, it was choppy and small again. I changed to the short ride plate and tried the nozzle adjusted up a few degrees. Man, the ski would pop out of the water quick, but would unload the pump causing the motor to hit the rev limiter. The next set, I dropped the trim square to the bottom, that was it. It held the nose down which made it turn. Handling was much better, but it was so rough you couldn't get a real feel. What I did notice is that I was not near as tired as I was on my SJ. The wide bond rails keeps the ski stable so you are not constantly correcting which wears you out. I don't think I fell in the whole day.
The next time we rode, it was rough, but not near like the first two rides and there was some surf. This is when I really started to appreciate this ski. The ski turns on a dime. It's not a twitchy carve, it's a controlled slide. Landing re-entries sideways in the white water always made me loose it on my SJ, the Matrix just control sides over it. I got on Jim's SJ with tubbies, I didn't feel at home any more. After riding a SJ for years, I noticed I had to keep the pole on the hood of the SJ to keep it stable.
The turned up nose gives you the confidence that you are not going to stick it coming down the face of a wave. Again, did I tell you how stable it is!!! I'm really liking this thing.
I'm a hit or miss roller. Most of the waves were small and water was shallow and cold, so I didn't try any rolls, but Jim and Tanner were throwing them left and right on this ski. They liked it.
Flat water handling, I don't know, we have an ocean.
So far like it, as I get to ride it in different conditions I'll give you an update. Later....
