Anyone installed the new camera and light combo that WiFis so you dont run wires, just screw camera/light into fixture and program it via wifi. Looks neat, not sure where i saw it but it was unveiled at CES this year.

That's pretty cool. Our new house has floodlights installed on every corner with one facing in each direction so I could install an 8 camera system in under 10 minutes.

The hardest part would be retraining my wife to not turn them off every night. I'd have to invert the light switches in the wall so her compulsion to make sure all the switches are down and off would work in my favor. ;)

Or take a label maker and put labels on all the switches.

My question is: how cheap can one rig a server or switch so they can watch a house from this camera, using a phone, whilst being on the road?

I think I pay $2.99 a month for the web service for iSpy. The software itself is free for consumers depending on how many cameras you want to use or what features you want to unlock.

I was expecting a package to be delivered from Germany on Monday and set my iphone to live mode at work and watched the UPS guy deliver it.

You should not really need a server unless you want to archive the video feeds. The camera has a flash drive port to save video too. Put a 32GB card should hold a week of video atleast on full quality. For remote access, you just setup a DYNDNS account. ($30/year). Then port forward the cameras IP port on your router, to the local static IP of the camera. Then you just type the DYN url you purchased, followed by the IP forward port, in any webbrowser.... and you can access the camera's built in web server just like you are on your network. Sounds hard if you've never done it before, but its really not that bad. And the $30 yearly DYN account you can setup as many cameras or other local network devices as you want. I have a few IP DVR cameras setup this exact way now. I also have a IP 120v power strip that I setup to start a dehumidifier at my vaca house automatically when humidity reaches 55%. I can access the power strip using the same DYNDNS address, just different forwarded ip port. Pretty cool stuff.

We bought Swann View POE system. 2TB hard drive and 4 cameras. I'm trying to find cameras to add to it currently. After having analog cameras I'm really loving the POE.

Swann has a free app that allows you to see your cameras from your phone as long as you connect your DVR to your interwebz.

I've been pretty pleased overall.

Just curious how many cameras you guys feel is adequate? How many did you start with, how many do you have now and what do you think is ideal?

I think I would want at least 8 cameras with the option to add up to as many as 12.? Placement would be; Six for general grounds, one specifically on the driveway and another on the front door. Sound reasonable or overkill?

I think 8 is the least I would be comfortable with. I purchased a Q-see POE system from Costco last year with 12 cameras (16 channel) and thankfully I tested it out prior to install. It was DOA, I returned it and haven been shopping on and off since.

My neighbors garage got broken into and their Swann system got a really clear picture of the perps. I guess the police detective recognized the guy, more to come on that one.

The wife got tired of me talking about it and told me to just order the damn thing so I ordered the ZModo 8 Ch, 1TB system from Amazon.

I started playing with it this morning but I am not impressed with the picture quality at all. The field of view is pretty narrow as well but I really only need a couple wider angles so I could live with upgrading a few of the cameras.

But. if this is all I can expect from these cheaper systems then i am going to have to rethink my strategy and go back to IP camera's. I already have the server and software, I would just need an 8 port POE switch and budget about $250 per camera. :(

I returned the Zmodo kit yesterday and ordered the base components to start laying a kickazz IP POE camera system.
- 16 port gigabit switch,
- 8 port POE injector and
- 3 4MP 1440P Outdoor IP cameras

This will upgrade the backbone of my current network and tie in nicely with my current iSpy camera software.
