Security surveillance camera

I have to set up a surveillance system for my parents who have been harassed and threatened multiple times by a new neighbor. There is an order of protection but he keeps coming to the property line and screaming obscenities.

The one spot I REALLY need to have coverage of would be blocked by a large tree if I mounted a camera anywhere on the house. So my only option would be to mount it to the tree.

Can I mount it to the tree and run the cable with slack to the house or do I need a support cable to run the power and video cable?

Sorry to hear about your parents situation.

Many of the new HD systems are POE (Power over Ethernet) so you are just using one cable for everything. I'm looking at a few different systems right now and really want one with PTZ capability (Pan/tilt/zoom) Costco has a few different systems on sale right now.

I am considering this one: http://www.costco.com/Lorex-8-Channel-IP-NVR-with-2TB-HDD,-8-1080p-Cameras-and-130'-Night-Vision.product.100217003.html

Can you drop a post to mount it to and bury the line?

You could mount it to the top of the fence on your property in the view pof another camera. Tempting, easy bait for vandalism charges.

There is no fence, only shrubs. This is the offending tree. I took the picture from the main area I need to keep watch on. To the left of the picture is the neighbor's property.

There's got to be a back story there. Does the neighbor have any particular trigger that sets him off? I'd invite a plains clothes officer over for "coffee" one day and see if you can get a witness to the abuse.

At this time, I can't give specifics. Police said he's a hot headed ex military medic with nothing better to do. He's bothering other neighbors as well. Screams at people when they park on the street (legally) near his house.

That sums it up well enough. Sorry they have to deal with that.

With that in mind, I'd make sure whatever camera you choose, has a mic option as well.

I was playing with the feature last night. I am tailoring a special channel for my entrance camera so it sends me alerts and allows me to listen.

@Grouper That sucks man... hope that dude chill's out.

My only complaint about my system is the range of the IR illuminators. I added a separate iluminator on one camera just to see what it would do. But it's a pain because you have to find a plug for it etc etc. I'd like to get a illuminator that will cover a large room etc, almost like the lights being on, even though its dark. Same for the outside.

My system has a sound option but I don't know if my camera's are equipped with mics.

Not sure if anyone knows of a solution, but I have a location that i want to monitor that would be very difficult to get a ethernet cable back to the DVR. So i wanted to use a wireless camera, and have the receiver covert the image into whatever signal that is put out onto a ethernet cable in a 'language' the POE receiver can understand.

The little bit of digging I did indicates that it might be possible if these are true IP cameras. If they are some other media and just happen to be using network cable instead of shielded wire or coax, then you might be chit out of luck. But, if you can manually set the IP on the camera you want to extend, and then install a wifi bridge, you should be able to make it work.

Here's one of the threads I found some detail on.

Hi, just wanted to let people know it's possible to use the Lorex IP Cams on either the PoE ports or the external network port of the Costco NVR. I was able to power a camera with my own PoE adapter and place it on the external NVR network. I had to manually set it's IP address and then configure it with the Lorex netHD PC software to use a 'manual' IP instead of the 'plug-n-play' setting.

This will allow me to achieve my requirement of placing one camera in a separate building separated by a WIFI link.

There was also a dropdown selection for camera type that had a number of other IP camera brands - LOREX, ARECONT, AXIS, ONVIF, PANASONIC, PELCO, PSIA, SAMSUNG, SANYO, ZAVIO.

Mine should be here any day. I just picked up a couple boxes of Cat5e cable and need to start pulling wire out to all the placess I plan to add cameras...as well as a few alternative locations.

In anticipation, I started to look into why my iSpy remote app on my iphone is so sketchy. Turns out I am a few dozen minor revisions and 3 major revisions behind on the software updates. Running the latest and greatest version of the iSpyPro software now and everything is working great. My only complaint with the software so far is the monthly hosting fee of $7.50 for the remote app feature where there are so many free options out there.

When I was reading through the new software features I discovered it has optional plug ins for Facial and License plate recognition. :) I plan to set up the entrance camera with alerts so facial recognition should be pretty interesting to play around with. The License plate recognition requires a special narrow focus camera strategically placed but I am not sure if the facial needs the same consideration.

Only got about an hour to set up one camera and do some quick tests but so far I am more than happy with the new cameras.

This time I went with Reolink RLC-410 IP cameras for $69.99 each. They plug and play on my existing network and were configured into my existing software within minutes.

These pics don't do it any justice and it's crystal clear on my PC and iphone. The resolution on my PC is 2560x1440 and the mobile version only goes as high as 640x360. I can actually read the writing on the whiteboards from my PC.

The best part is that the P2P software they came with seems to be working great and is free so I can drop the $7.50/month hosting fees that I have been paying to iSpy for the past year.

Night vision in the garage is almost a better image than the low light version.
