@OCD Solutions Looking at a 4 camera system as well. The reolink system you posted above comes to 740 canadian. Does that include everything needed to install minus monitor? Any other brands you have experience with that may be a little cheaper? Was hoping to spend about 500 but if its not going to be good quality picture, no point in having it.

I haven't played with any other systems other than a couple of the cheaper TTV styles but the picture quality was horrible so I'm hung up on Reolink.

If you go with a wired POE kit, you will need the Ethernet cables to connect the cameras to the main unit. Depending on your application, it may be easier to purchase preformed cables and just plug everything in. I find it easier to run bulk Ethernet cables and then crimp on the ends myself.

If you go with premolded cables, order different colors so it's easier to distinguish them later.

Ok yeah i think i will go with that kit you posted, found it for 670 shipped. Do you need a something to power the ethernet cables or does the nvr do that for you? Good idea with the ethernet cables I will look into that as well. I just bought my first house so got some time before i get the keys to plan stuff out.

The cameras plug right into the NVR and it handles everything.

I went a little overboard with my install but It does more than just the cameras.

One thing I have always considered doing was to install and have the NVR record all the data to an external drive that is remotely located. That way, if anyone ever did break in and decide to steal the device to protect themselves, they would likely unplug the cables and focus on the main unit and leave the actual data behind.

or just hide or lock up the main unit. I feel like to did a good job concealing it but I wish I had it in a cage too

All you need is the NVR connected to your home wifi and sync with your phone one time. Then it's just a matter of launching the app and you can view, rewind, save video, ptz, all kinda stuff. Super simple. Quality from phone is OK, but the full quality is on the NVR directly if you ever needed higher res

Well I am sorry to report that I have had my first issue with my Reolink camera system. The power supply failed for the NVR back on March 20th. I contacted Reolink customer support and they shipped me a replacement back on March 23rd. Fast forward to today, 25 days later, and I still don't have it. They provided tracking via China Post but it stopped updating on the 26th, once the package crossed into the US.

They use a 48VDC 2 Amp power supply which is non standard so it's not like I can just drop in somewhere and pick another one up. I have boxes full of different P.S.'s but nothing appropriate. Had I known it was going to take so long to receive, I would have just ordered one but typically they ship things pretty quick.

I finally got fed up enough today and yanked the heart out of my CNC controller which just happens to be a 48VDC 7.3 Amp power supply. It's overkill and it cripples my CNC but we have gotten so used to the cameras that going without just seems barbaric, lol.

In the meantime, I used this scenario to justify ordering a second CNC control box with another 48VDC power supply so that I can finally separate the controls from my lathe and milling machines. I currently have everything stuffed into one control box and it is exceeding it's limits. The second P.S. will allow me to get my CNC back in operation and the cameras up and running until the proper replacement arrives.

I have reached out to Reolink and expressed my dissatisfaction so we will see how they handle it from here. They have been excellent up until now so hopefully they come through still.

Ok well two I can lay my hands on right now pretty sure I have a few more either buried in the car or still at work. Once synced via LAN will work off wifi needs a power source but if you want to run a hard line I would just poe it and be done.

These are outdoor rated cams as well. Will make a x member a nice deal on this pair.

We marketed them as indoor/outdoor cams. Not like the listing shows.

I am thinking it is time to buy a camera. Neighbor across the street got her car window smashed in Friday night. I want to find something good enough to read license plate numbers at night.

Plenty of cameras capable of that but location will be a huge factor. To get a good clean shot, the camera may have to be in a position that lay leave it exposed to vandalism. They can be concealed but the IR lights are a dead giveaway.

Two of our cameras are dedicated to watching the neighborhood and most neighbors know to get a hold of us should anything happen. There has been mixed emotions from them but they have all become aware when there was an incidence. It makes it easier to swallow that they are being watched when it shows in their best interest.
The Reolinx software allows for privacy screens so you can actually blank off areas like if one of the views looks directly in a window or something.

I have also been very clear that unless given a reason to do so, I do not review the footage. They need to contact me within 5 days of any incident. The police even know to contact us at this point as we have provided video for 3 separate incidences now.

Our neighbors have been reporting vehicle break-ins again so I reviewed the footage this morning and caught a group of 5 guys working both sides of our street.

Here's some stills I pulled. Should be good enough for a positive ID.
