sure it's easiest to swap hin's .
but likes it's been said it's illegal.
there is a lot of guys saying if it ain't stolen then who cares and it's no one else's place to say it's wrong.

how are you verifying it's not stolen?

how many of you that feel that way have had one if not two of your ski's stolen and had to try and recover them yourselves?

just curious

I'd pass. Too much risk involved. Receiving stolen property, etc. Ya just never know who you're dealing with. I know a prick here in MI that turned a guy into the cops after he sold the guy two stolen skis.

That just sounds to ridiculous... Why would he turn him in after he just sold them to him. Did he steal them also? lol
Did he have a jail wish for him and his friend to go together at the same time? :bananapowerslide: hahaha

The guy that stole/sold the skis had the cops come after him 3 years later, and he THEN covered his butt by ratting out the other guy.

I've had my ski and my bro's ski stolen from my house before. I do try to get the back story on ski's. Often times ski's come from non-title states, trade hands more than once then it's impossible to get them titled or they're POS's and people need the ski's removed.

My personal SJ I ride now traded hands a bunch of times and more than one of the people never titled it. It just turned out luckily I knew who the person was 2 or 3 transactions ago who still had the title in his name (andrea - Rotaxgranade). I knew the person I bought it from and trusted his word that it wasn't stolen, turned out it wasn't.

There are plenty of hinless hulls from hull upgrades too.

NJ is a non title state. All you get when you buy new is a certificate of origin. The dmv is suppose to keep it when you 1st register the ski. After that all you have is a reggy card. A ski is to be sold with reggy card and bill of sale.

Talked with some people that regulate this subject. I was curious cause im looking into buying a ski the same way. They said that to first get the plates run to make sure they arent stolen. when you go to buy it have them sign it over with numbers of all different plates saying they are selling it as unoperational and for parts. this would protect me from buying stolen property. then i would have to pay nearly $100 and wait a minimum of 90 days to create a investigation that its not stolen. they they would issue me a title. i hope all this is true cause its a sweet deal.

How interesting: I bought a squarenose hull for $50 'with title', got the hull and he sent the 'title' in the mail. I get it and it's the registration from Michigan, expired in 2006, registered to the guy he bought it from in July and signed over to him, then he just sent it to me. That's a big no-go to get it transferred since nowhere on there does it have my name, plus it's still in the previous owner's name, not his, so it's not his to transfer to me legally.

grrr.

Can you title it as a homebuilt in KY? That might be easier than chasing down the title.

I broke my fx1s hin tag in 4 pieces:banghead:. It was fastened with screws which looked like it could fall off at any time, it took it off before painting. Afterwards I tried to rivet it back on and it broke, it was very brittle. Luckily I still have the inside hin tag. I like the old js hulls how its made into the hull and you can't remove it or break it, :thinkerg: good idea. Not so good for lost titles.

There is an empty GP1200 Hull with a single trailer for sale local to me with title for $200.

Good oportunity for someone who needs a hull or HIN in my mind so this is a good thread.

That is not what this thread is about, at all.

Thats a good idea for someone who broke theirs. Can they make them out of something besides plastic, possibly stainless?

A family friend has a laser engraver that can cut/etch Stainless with no problems. I looked into it when I needed HIN's replaced to bring my rebuilt SN across the border. I ended up leaving the ski in Canada but getting the tags made up was not the problem.

They actually design them to break if tampered with.

Even if you get the plastic ones off in one piece in the first place, you will likely break them when re-attaching again with a rivet. That's why I was going to have the new ones made to match all the dimensions of the stainless ones on my 07 SJ.

I actually tore my plastic HIN plate up with a wire wheel years ago. I thought they were metal and it had been painted over many times so I was trying to clean it.
I had to have the state of GA reissue me a new HIN# with 2 GA issued HIN decal. The DNR guys had to come out to the house 2 times. First to try and get a rubbing of either one of the OEM HIN #'s and verify it was what I said it was. They had to come again later and apply the New GA issued decal to the ski themselves. Nothing like a gang of police officers in your garage looking over your junk.

Every state is different, so nobody can answer all these 'what can/should I do?' questions about HIN & registeration requirements.

I removed mine on my old SJ at least 3 times for painting, drilled rivets out, re-installed. No problems, no breaking.
