Shipping Hull Via Greyhound

Has anyone used Greyhound for shipping a hull? Greyhound will accept a package that weighs less than 100lbs and can accommodate dimensions up to 30” H x 47” W x 82” L. Most hulls fit both these categories. Googling around it seems the Kayak community uses Greyhound quite a bit. I would think a jetski hull could survive if you made a mummy out of it by wrapping in a few layer of bubble wrap, covered with cardboard, and held that down with saran wrap; and was given handles for a way to easily transport from buss to buss.

Pros:
Coast to coast for approx. $100

Cons:
They will not insure anything more than $300
And the hull would move from buss to buss probably being treated like a suitcase. Ex. CA to NC is 5 buss changes

I would think this would work very, it all hinges on how the buss loaders would treat a 100lbs package. I sure they would not be thrilled to see it. Has anyone looked into this before? Suggestions for best way to protect the hull? Was it worth saving $400 / 75% off the cost of freight?

Regardless they don't insure but up to $300 so not sure if I understand the $1000 max value correctly?

If no one has actually used this service for a hull what's your thought on a hull actually arriving not damaged? Far fetched?

My thought is the busses have a drop of about a foot from the road to the loading bay. And being so big not sure if anyone could lift it like they were entering into a log tossing competition. Maybe they would drag it from bus to bus? Or they could shootput a smaller luggage bag with wheels into the side of it.. What are some worst case scenarios?

Try u-ship man or get a few more freight quotes. Just imagine if it showed up damaged/cracked. You'll only get 300 bucks and a busted hull.

I shipped a car hood from Illinois to Colorado years ago for like $75 and have received numerous import body kits through Greyhound. Never had any types of issues and the rates are unreal compared to actual freight. The down side is the limited amount of terminals.

5 bus changes.... I rode greyhound from LA to San Fran and it took nearly 24 hours and the bus stopped all over the place. I had to keep tranferering buses, More than 5 times in 350 miles. Most changes ocured at night, late!

I'd rather do a train

how was it packaged? in a box? Did the box look all beat up?

I got a 6' front bumper for my Ram 2500 shipped from New Orleans to Charlotte on the Greyhound, it weighed about 90 lbs. It arrived in perfect shape and was wrapped in an old blanket! I would not worry too much about it getting beat up. It more or less comes down to the risk of it being lost or something crazy and being underinsured...

honestly man i'd do pool noodles around the rub rails. 2 noodles under it. and 2 over the top. shrink wrap the poop out of it an make easy to grab handles so they lift it properly and its as easy for them as possible and let it ride.

I built a light wooden frame for the car hood and suspended the corners in foam. The fiberglass body kits I received were all wrapped in bubble wrap and foam padding. From what I remember, the rear of the bus was for shipping goods, and the underneath was for luggage. Unless your hull gets dropped at some point, it should be fine. Go buy a couple rolls of r13 insulation or moving blankets and wrap it up.

I don't understand...You spend thousands on a new or used a/m hull but don't want to spend any money to ship it and possible damage it with no coverage...?? I shipped a complete SN (300 lbs) from OK to SC for $350, that included $3000 in insurance. I could of got it do for a little cheaper, but this was the easiest route, buyer got the ski a few days later, undamaged. I used UShip. FAIA freight quoted me $300 for the same shipment, but i was going to have to build a crate, I didn't want too.

Maybe greyhound option is totally fine, but i wouldn't chance it, that's my 2 cents...
