FX-1 Shortening stock FX1 handlepole

I want a little shorter of a handlepole on my FX1 and i've found aftermarket parts are fairly difficlut to find for the FX1. Looking at the pole is it as simple as drilling out the rivets at the base of the pole, cutting down the pole to the desired length, then reattatching it to the base?

I know it cant be that easy but was hopping...

Its that easy.

When I did mine, I replicated the cut that yamaha made on each side to allow the pole to flex into the cast lower.

Typically you have to cut the pole flush with the base, then chip, grind and cuss the cut portion out of the base. So the least amount you can shorten it is ~3".

I used stainless 1/4-20 button head bolts with nylock nuts and fender washers to re-attach everything because i don't trust my ability to rivet it back in place.
Probably overkill, but considering how much stress the pole sees I tend to lean towards "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" philosophy.

On another pole, I wrapped the lower bracket and the base of the pole with CF. Just food for thought.

GL!

SS rivets for sure. I use thickened epoxy and shorten pole at the top, not the bottom. If you shorten from the bottom, it will no longer fit the lines of the hood and looks stupid (in my opinion). Plus, you actually realize more effective shortened length when in riding posture if shortened from the top. Stare at it, this will make sense.

Yes, shorten from the top. It is simple, it doesn't need to be a winter project, just a cold Sunday afternoon and a 12 pack project.

me and a buddy did it to his superjet at the beach when his pole got loose........ Took maybe an hour....... plus dry time for the Marine Tex (think that is what we used.......

The fx1 top piece is indeed shorter. If you try to use one with an older sj steering cable, you will have to get creative mounting the cable stop and turn plate ball connector.

i dont agree with shortening at the top, but i did do it when it came loose. you can only cut so much off the top before the head no longer fits over the glass stem. i've cut the bottom several times and usually after i ripped the pole out of the base. if you cut the base, you can use short bolts instead of rivets. you cant do that at the top.

When I shortened mine I did the top and bottom so I could freshen the whole thing up with epoxy and new rivets.
