Should I switch from 38's to 44's

We have 2008 SJ, typical 62T/61X set-up, pipe, ported cyl , ADA head 180/180, V-Froce reeds with stock 38's. I have a set of Yamaha 44's off a 760 Venture and I could switch to them.

We only do lake riding, playing around, jumping cruiser wakes and we go on long rides pretty often so fuel consumption is a factor for us. For those who switched from 38's to 44's did you gain much power and did they use a lot more fuel or just a little more?

oem 44's are not the best carbs. Hard to get the pop off pressure right and still have a low end hit. However, I have ran many OEM 44's on 701's and currently have em on my wifes PHP760.

Why do all the porting, head, pipe, etc, and not upgrade the carbs? I would use them. Then go back to the 38s if fuel becomes an issue.

One of the strongest running skis I ever rode was a ported 701 with basically same setup that was done by Wamiltons. With... OMG 38's. If he had AMASON SBN 44s I would say go for it. OEM carbs can be difficult to get dialed.

You already own the carbs. You can probably find the jet specs pretty easily. You need 4 jets $10 if you get it right the first time. Needles and springs, if you need to change them, will run you $40 for the sets. $5-10 is gaskets. Worst case you don't like it, sell the stuff and put the 38s back. Best case you are happy.

Personally, I'm not interested in giving up my 38s or airbox. I'd hang on to the carbs for a later date and spend my money on a lightened flywheel, enhancer or some other similar part you didn't mention. I say that because that is what I did. I have 44s on my X2 just because I can but it runs like there's a hole in the tank compared to my superjet.

Thanks for the responses and advice everyone. I do have most bolt-ons, including a MSD enhanser and lightened flywheel. I just hit the highlights when listing my mods. Like most people, I'm always looking for more power and the 44's became available. My problem is the fuel use, because we go on long rides it's an issue if my ride time is 10-15 min less than the rest of the group I ride with.

Last year I had a very tall prop, so I was always on the gas hard because I had no low end power. This winter I switched to a Hooker 10/16, I know I'll have a lot more low end so I'm hoping I'm on the gas less and my fuel mileage and ride time actually goes up. We'll see this spring if that is true and then I'll decide on the 44's.
