SX/SXi/SXi Pro sj pump to sx hull

JGringo

When in doubt, Throttle-out.
Why would you do that? Are you placing a SJ engine in there too? It would make more sense to change the coupler than the whole pump cavity... It's definitely doable, just look up Conversion hulls over at pwctoday.com and they'll show you what's up...

well gringo, im mid build for a surf sx hull, with a fire breathing kwak motor, and i want to use a bigger pump, 144mm sj to be exact, lots of peller, cone, nozzle combos for the 144, nothing for the sx pump, dont forget i live in england and its all sj, over here, kwaks are worth nothing, no parts, no joy

this is how far i got so far, bout 8" shorter, with home built tubbies, re done backend, all the work is being done from the outside in, ie the foam/filler you see in the pic has been coverd in glass, removed the foam from the inside, then layers of kevlar and woven glass on the inside, let me know what you think, plus any ideas you guys have would be welcome

Tom21 had lifted a mold of the SJ pump to copy into a FX1 bottom deck. He sells fiberglass parts. He is not selling that part, but if you ask him nicely, he may consider lifting a pump copy from his mold and selling it. If you went that route, you'd be changing out the entire pump cavity, as his mold goes from the front of the intake to the back of the pump.

I'm not sure how you would put a SJ pump in w/o changing everything, but it's just fiberglass, so anything is possible.

Here's a side-by-side I wrote up of the SJ vs the X2. The X2 and the SX both use 140mm pumps. The 750sx has a larger pump intake than the 650sx/x2, so there are obviously some differences there I cannot help you with. You may be able to put a SJ pump in a SX hull w/o molding in the SJ pump cavity, but the X2 pump tunnel is 1/2" narrower than the SJ. Again, not sure on the 750 pump tunnel size.

A 144 will go in a 650-750 very easily. You will need to make a custom pump shoe and ideally remove most of the inlet then reskin. The 144 will sit two inches aft
so enough inlet area may be gained without modification.

thanks for the info guys, the original idea was to take a mould of my buddys sj pump housing and tunnel, then make my own and fit it, with a bit of jiggery pokery thrown in, after a few basic measurments it looks like its gonna fit(ish) fingers crossed x

I'd love if you PM me if it works out reminding me to check your build thread. I'm interested in hearing if it works and hate to miss the write up.

thought i would add a few extra pics to show how it all started, as i said in previous qoutes, old kwaks aint worth poop over here, so got this old girl for free !! then the usual, chop/foam/carve then finished the final shape with a $5 bag of construction filler!! pva and wax over the top, then the glass over that, once all gone hard just pick out the foam and the filler

how much weight was taken off by shortening the hull? could you attach a link to your build thread? Im interested because i want to do a 300sx build with a 144 pump but i cant justify buying a superjet for 2000+ and then cutting it up right away (especially since i ride a 650sx right now). So if you can fit a 144 into a 650 or 750 pump then i could just cut up a 650, which pop up for free sometimes.

the stock hull/hood weight was measured at 130 on the nose, that was with nothing in it like mounts, pump shoe etc, because of the materials im adding like kevlar and woven cloth glass im looking to get the weight down to around 100 110lbs mark, and how do i attach a link ?? by the way how much do you guys pay for footholds over there ?

had a bit of stormy weather over the last day or 2, but still managed to get stuff done, pics show my garden !!! and the hull all glassed over and cleaned out from the inside ready for the kevlar layers. i will be moulding the tunnel from me mates 701 at the weekend so should have more pics up of how its going next week, keep your fingers crossed its gonna work out for me !!

had a look at the sj housing and decided its too much work to mould/make a new one so im going to rework the existing hull, its a bit of a faff but should be less work i think, while deciding on that i started work on the new tray and sides, this foam im using is amazing stuff, easy to work with and will not react with resins so i can lay over the top, hope you like !!

finaly got all the insides done and a few layers on the new style tray sides, just need to stick it all together now. got the final parts i need for the 144 pump conversion, so i will make a start on that tomorow and post pics as i go
