Have fun ripping me if you wish but some good advise would be appreciated. Bought a stock 750 sxi pro, rode it for 1.5 seasons traded up to a new 2011 sxr last august. Love the sxr and carving turns on flat water, but i'm thinking i'm ready for the next step. What is the next step on a sxr? Am I ready to start some mods? been thinking i need side sponsons, a ride plate and a intake grate to take it to the next level.

Those are good places to start. What kind of riding would you like to do most? Race, Flatwater freestyle, Surf/Freeride?

Race;
Not sure if sponsons are common in race/go fast riding, haven't done much of that.
an extended ride plate with grooves is usually helpful for this.

Surf/Freeride and flatwater freestyle
Sponsons definitely
Intake grate (go deep like a worx 205)
Shortened and/or d-cut ride plate
Also footholds would be a big addition here.

Edit - I don't think too many people here will rip on anyone with a genuine interest in learning, we all start somewhere and most of us welcome anyone new to the sport with as much help and advice as we can think of/have time for :)

My budget is less of a problem than my skills at wrenching; maybe $1000 max. I would say flat water freestyle and carving turns while freeriding are where my interests are. Because it is the 2011 35 year final addition sxr i really dont want to change the bars or look too much. Pushing forward; what "tricks" should i be attempting?, What does it take to do a "sub", should i start dragging my foot in turns ...?. Thank you for your input, I really enjoy this site, and the advise you all have is priceless.

#1- An aftermarket bilge pump with an on/off switch on the handlebars if you hadn't already.

I have always started under the boat first (handling and hook up). Impeller, grate, rideplate, etc. Then maybe a Group K milled head and the list goes on.

I really dig my shortened handlepole, and thought it was a great mod!

- cut the ride plate shorter and/or D-cut it
- get more steering out of it (not sure easiest way to do that on an SX-R)
- bilge pump DEFINITELY
- on an old stock yamaha, an impeller was a MUST. Don't know about latest and greatest Kawi impellers...but if it's aluminum then get an impeller
- intake grate is good, but to be honest you might not even feel the difference
- footholds

...and...can't believe nobody has said this yet...PIPE IT. (unless the 35th anniversary model already has some goodies like this???)

if its got the stock mat in the tray, try upgrading to hydroturf,or for kawis try a jettrim or AP mat.you will find the new mat to provide alot more grip for your feet.

Don't touch the impeller until you get a big ace engine, maybe not even then. SXR impellers are an excellent all around impeller.

Ride a ski with the sponsons you want. If you are talking Destroyers, and ride any smooth flat water, they suck. They carve and do good in rough chop, but chine walk so then you only have a one-trick-pony. Turning sponsons that mount at the rear bond line do work, but look ugly IHMO.

#1 Bilge pump with bar mount.

#2 Foot Holds and hydroturf.

#3 Save your pennies for a Factory Pipe wet pipe

#4 When you desire more power get an aluminum flywheel.

D cut ride plate is great for rec riding, I'd try to pick up a spare stock one and cut that. D cut on mine made it porpoise when river cruising, having a stock or extended plate for those situations would be nice.

SXR is a good platform for a recreational ski. It does everything well, but not one thing great. The hull is strong as a tank and as heavy too. They are stable and fun. Just ride the piss out of it and have fun.

Im going to go against the grain and say dont get bilge pump.

The SXR does a really nice job of keeping water out as is. Unless you ride surf it will be fine with just a one way valve in the back (where drain plug is). Much cheaper and less maintenance.

Why not look at some nice zero degree bars? They won't change the look of the ski much at all. And you can always put the stock bars back on if you need to. Get a spare pole and cut it to a shorter length and leave the oem one in storage. other than that, footholds, intake grate, versiplug, and air conditioning.

Am I the only one thinking the 35th anniversary version won't be worth any more than a slightly older model in a couple years? I just can't see that meaning much except on an emotional level. Just my thinking.

my vote would be a wet pipe. it would eat that budget up but if your wanting power gains, and who doesnt, there it is. handling is different for every person, i suggest trying different setups before you buy if possible. im a fan of destroyer sponsons on rough or flat. r&d or skat intake, rd stealth or macc ride plate. that combo sticks like glue, but stock hull/handling isnt bad at all for beginner-novice aggressive styles.

Just go to Blowsion and order a Worx ride plate and intake grate. You'll be set! Worx now has a freestyle/freeride plate for superjets...Designed by Pierre Maixent and Ross Champion.

TBM intake and ride plate is needed. I couldent stand the OEM intake grate.

Zero degree bars are also needed. It move you forward in the tray and helps your riding a bit more. You can also keep the OEM pad and everything so it looks stock

I would for SURE do that before I did a pipe or any motor mods. That causes much more of a headache than the top two listed.... and the top two things will guaranteed improve you ski
