SXR spring is here; What are my riding goals this season?

I'm also against the bilge pump unless for some reason your ski tends to just get water in it. I have two SXR's, both stay dry. Best mod I have done was intstall Destroyers, haven't noticed the above mentioned chine walk, but if it does, just go a tad faster and it will disappear. Great luck with the Skat stainless intake grate, just make sure not to use the aluminum, they get trashed and are the same price. On one ski I installed a -2 handpole and straight bars as well as the tbm rear sponsons with stockplate, also both skis have oem impellers. Makes for a fun day. As for spending money on pipes and flywheels, yes they make a difference. But here is a thought, what differnce does a couple mph more make if your just out rec riding or riding by yourself? I have spent thousands in the past 20 years on mods, they never really made me a better rider, sometimes made me a tad slower, they did drain my wallet and didn't make me have any more fun. Final push, my stock machines have beat alot of limited skis at both regional and National events, my theory is take what you have and learn to ride it, a smooth powerband helps alot here. If your into freestyle...sell what you have and get a freestyle boat as well as throw most of what I just said out the window!

Best of luck!

Interestingly, one of the best mods is one of the cheapest = footholds.

They are also by far the most difficult.

By far.

wow awesome amount of info here! thank you all! I know i can handle swapping grates and plates, I see the advantages of footholds, but know that attempting to install them would end up in frustration. I had never thought about the straight bars before, but can mentally feel how they would help your positioning in the tray. so i'm thinking ride plate, intake grate, and straight bars. Does anyone want to take the time to post pictures of a sir with straight bars and stock pad?

lots of money wasting advice in this thread! beware lol
handle pole spring tensioner from blowsion, keep the weight of the fugly pole off your back.
steering and bars, do it, dont think about it, do it.
intake grate, keep it mild scoop unless your hardcore racer or ride in insane chop only.
exhaust, will change EVERYTHING about the ski, you want this the most. wet pipes only, used pipes are good!

what not to waste your time with
flywheel, rideplate, footholds, freestyle, sponsons, stitched mat, scupper(versiplug), keeping it "stock"
what to waste your time with
riding, gas money, having fun, staying safe, getting a superjet.

yeah i recommend a bilge.just cause its easy.also if the mat is anything like the old 750sx's i highly recommned some hydroturf.not necessarily a stitched mat,but its a big improvement over stock.when you start getting some arm yanking power, the stock mat wont keep your feet on.

so i chickened out on all your advise except for a handle pole spring. I have not ruled out doing more. I most likly will get a intake grate and ride plate to swap around and ride abit just to expierament.

not real sure what shonuf meant by "rear sponsons will spoil you if you like to carve". Is this a good thing? i think i may like being spoiled, and i know i want to carve.

I also am not sure what changing turn plates does? i see how the zero degree bars could give you more leverage in turns because they are wider, and see how they would give you more room in the tray for poisitioning. But I do not know what the turn plate mod does?

You'll experiment one time with an intake grate and ride plate.

Footholds were a very scary idea to me because of cutting into the hull. I've yet to use them but I cut my leg enough to require stitches so they were a no-briner for me. My feet came loose and my leg hit something. I was done for the season because I wasn't secured to the ski. Rethink not doing them. Skis that I have been on with them seem more comfortable despite other things I don't like simply because I am connected to the ski.

Not sure why people are telling you not to install a bilge pump. They're cheap, barely weigh anything, and easy/fast to install. I also recommend getting zero degree bars, they ain't expensive and is also very easy to install. Also get some odi lock-on grips. Worx intake grate is also a great add on, a lil pricey but definitely worth it. As for rideplate, just cut it flush with the ski, "haven't d-cut yet, so i can't comment on that. Also buy some hydroturf, you'll love the upgrade :)

And as far as a bilge goes, if you plan on doing any amount of subs, or other maneuvers that cause your ski to submerge, you're gonna find out quick why you'll need one. The hard way. So either ride your ski like a grandma or get one

Blocking off the front intake and opening up the rear of the hood helps keep water out in subs. I personally liked having hand holds on my SXR let you spin around on the hood easier for fountains and riding backwards.. they were a pain to get looking good tho..

Foot holds on an SXR... ehhh.. I did mine and while it was alright the ski is just too heavy to be really using them.. Maybe a set of Jettrim mats with the lifter wedges and kick tail would be easier.

The bilge, 0deg bars, ODI grips, and TBM intake grate are good ideas. I like front sponsons, but if you arent in race chop I wouldn't worry about it. Rear sponsons do help it stay hooked longer into a carve.

I wouldn't waste any money trying to make it lighter with carbon hoods and such.. It's a tank we have to accept that. TDR Waterboxes just make noise..

Save all you have for a Factory Pipe B/Wet Pipe. Best mod period. Then a shorter handle pole. UMI, RRP etc..

In the end try an figure out what kind of riding you like doing the best and realize that before you dump too much $$$ into trying to make the ski something it's not. Carving, high speeds, wake jumping = SXR, hood tricks, barrel rolls, subs, slides etc = Superjet
