Anyway to run a spring with an XMetal pole? Anyone done it? I think I need a new pole this winter and I want an XMetal, but if you can't run a spring I am thinking AC.

ps...I AM NOT gonna ride with a tight pole, so please do not suggest it. It is not good for the type of riding I normally do.

some people can get a kawi style spring to work work with the x-metal bracket, but I'm running a WDK bracket it just doesn't have an area large enough for the bottom foot of the spring to rest upon.

Other than that I think bending and trimming a RN UMI style spring is the only option. I have tried that but distorted the spring so much I need to start with a new one. Pinchy trial and error.

here is a pic of my current attempt... it works but not well. the bottom of the spring doesn't stay in the catch. The spring actually only starts to put tension on the pole when it is about 18 inches away from the hood, when it should put tension on it in all ranges of motion, including straight up.

Maybe a 440/550 spring would work?

Tricky has on on his XMetal pole, but it uses an Xmetal type bracket.......

Hey DJ, I will say it, I have raced my (old SJ) without a spring, ridden in the surf, and flat..... you do not have to have the pole set up so it is stiff. Mine is just tight enough that if I let go of it jumping, it stays there, but it also moves very easy. more like floating with you. Just enough tension so you dont have to hold it up, nor enough where you have to force it to move.

djkorn,

I tried a bunch of spring, The 440/550 did not fit properly but if you have a stock SXR 800 spring, it works fine on Xmetal pole with Xmetal bracket.

my xmetal pole/bracket is installed with two bolt (same as on the xmetal's website). To install the spring do you need to replace with stock bolt?
Pics anyone?

ps. yeah, yeah I already heard enough from smitty to tighten it up so don't try:argue:

yes you will need a bolt. i used a stud threaded on each end.

I am with the crowd that still likes pole springs too. Right now I still have a stock pole on my RN. When that breaks, I would also like to do a X metal with a spring. I have an x metal bracket already.

So basically you D-cut the bottom of the pole for the cables and just run it like stock with a stock bracket, stock bolt and stock SXR spring.

What kind of bushings are those? Blowsion UMI SJ Conversion or Blowsion AC SJ Conversion?

I am with DJ I cannot ride with the tight pole crap,it just ain't happening.
The spring works with the WDK braket just fine, mine has wood:Banane26: and I have gone to the semi stiff pole by cranking down the bolt a bit, it stays and doesn't flop around but moves freely when needed without a huge tug. It's nice since there is no effort when riding, the spring unloads the pole and the pole will hold position until you want it to change. Stock RN pole.
