Has anyone tried the $50 Mitsuba or Caltric starters? I'm curious how long they are holding up and what kind of compression they are turning.

I got one of the new $60-$70 ones on eBay last year. It lasted a week or two and wasted a day of riding. The seller did offer a new one for 1/2 price, but it was not worth the trouble to risk again.
used OEM for me from now on...

i have tried literally most every aftermarket starter on the market, trying to be a cheap ass.

would last about 6 months or less. DON'T do what i did.

in the end, i went back to OEM... been using for years and no problems.

another issue with aftermarket, is the output shaft. they use a much softer metal, and the teeth become rounded.

if you just need one to sell a boat, go for it.

if you are riding / keeping the boat for any length of time, OEM!

I thought mitsuba made the oem starters?

I just got this one. Was told its an oem from a 2010 superjet but it says mitsuba

The OP mentions $50 mitsuba starters in the first post. Are there cheap mitsuba and oem mitsuba different?

Sorry I understand now what you are saying now. Mitsuba are the oem starters. There are no $50. Mitsuba starters unless a cheap chinese knockoff is illegally using their name.

caltric starters are very very poor no bushings and very very low quaility steel on shaft, i never had one but two of my buddys blaster had one it lasted about ten or twelve starts and wore back plate and shaft, but what do you expect for something so cheap, if its just brushs rebuild your own or if winding burnt find good used oem or rebuilt oem

There was a company out of South or North Carolina that was selling the Mitsuba's new for around $90.00 Buddy bought one and had me install. Wish I had kept the link to them.

I just buy used OEM and always keep a backup as insurance. I've had one oem starter fail in 6-7 years.

When I pull my ski or my wife's ski apart to service it, checking the starter is part of the service. If it feels or sounds rough it gets put in the scrap box. Used OEM is what I've been using. It's good to know that McDog has had good luck with the SBT starter though.

It came on a motor I bought and I figured I would run It until it crapped out and bought a used oem to replace it. I never expected it to last this long. I'm as surprised as anyone.
