Starter repair help

My starter got really weak on me so I just pulled it apart. There is a brass color metal strap that goes from the positive connection over to two of the brushes that is cracked in half. Does anyone know if those are available? I see them in the aftermarket kits but aftermarket scare me since aftermarket starts are typically junk.

go on ebay and type in the model number and get a used starter off a street bike. Then swap the back of your SJ starter to it. I just got one for 30$ shipped that has never been under water. :)

Also replace the brass bushing in your flywheel cover and case for the bendix. You can get a pack of 5 on mcmaster car for less than 10$. Use a 1/2" tap to take them out.

Yeah you can get OEM replacement kit, but expensive.
Ive used a china kit in a OEM starter that worked like a charm.
But, did you before blaming the starter, make sure your cables and battery is 100% bullet proof (messaure voltage drop over the starer cables) ?

It's an electric motor. Very easy to rebuild. Using zip ties to hold the brushes works awesome. Caltric has kits. Swapping caps works most times but like mentioned can rub. It's easily remedied tho. Been doing this for years.

Thanks for the zip tie hint. I never do that and always end up cussing at them.
This site is the best!

I haven't done one in a bit. Pretty sure I posted on here when I found a new old stock of brand new Mitsuba 13 on ebay. Guy was selling em for 35 dollars each. Brand new. I bought like 6. Tried to tell a bunch of others. No one listened. When I did that with piston kits trying to help people, a very well known vendor on this site, bought all of them. And then doubled the price and re sold them.

So..... bought a mint motorcycle starter for $30 but it spins backwards.
looking at the brushes and everything they are wired identical. What do I have to do to change rotation???

Run er backwards lol.

I did one this weekend. I just swapped caps tho. Ran into the issue described above where rubbing happened. I just played with the shims between the 2 dif starters til it didn't. If you wanted to get into it you could measure the stack and blah blah go from there and do it like bucket valves. But it's easier and faster to just say it's rubbing. Less. It's wobbling. More. 2 or 3 times. Done. On the bench.
