Surfriding Steering Cables

I paid $279 for that Blowsion cable a few years ago - they dropped the price sometime in the past 24 months. I still think it was worth it even at that price.

Yeah I remember you and Chris Fiore talking about that when he was selling one. That's a hefty price for a steering cable. $179 isn't cheap either but I can deal with it knowing that I'm buying a quality part

I got my Blowsion cable yesterday. Very beefy cable ends and it also has heim joints with hardware on both ends. No more steering slop from the old balljoint setup if you haven't upgraded already

Got my Blowsion cable. Looks like a very nice construction, it's sealed very well. I used it for one ride though and now there's about a 1/4" of slop somewhere in the cable... Kind of concerning. Anyone else experience that?

Have a sbt cable in my surf ski. I lubed it myself before install. Year so far on it and it's smooth as the day I got it. I'm not nice to my steering either. Gotta run your cables right. Don't want any tension or binding that isn't needed in it.

Why do steering cables break? I can see how an exposed nozzle can do it. if there is no tension from being put in a bind at the metal parts what else can do it?

People :):):):)ing up their steering stops will do it a lot of times. Other than that, cheap cables break their housings.

My cheap cable broke inside the sheathing. It was the actual woven steel cable that broke and it was on the pole end, not the nozzle end so it has far less salt water exposure. I'm thinking that the cable may chaffe inside the cable housing when using a quick steer turn plate. Quick steer mods at the pole causes the steering cable to bend outward.

I just assembled mine last night. Had to cut the threaded cable and the threaded heim joint to use my outer pivot mount for most quick steer while still using steering stops to protect steering cable from bottoming out first. The cable is so beefy I couldn't use the inner pivot mounts without the cable hitting my cable holding bracket (home made). I haven't ridden it yet but it does have 1/4" of slop so I'd say its just the nature of the cable.

I thought it was tight when I installed it... I would think that would be weird for them to purposely put that in there, like they anticipated we would mess up the install and they're trying to protect the cable?
Oh well, I'll keep running it. My other complaint is the pump end isn't long enough for the x metal trim; I need an extension and these don't look like our standard metric threads...

I was worried about that part too since I have Xmetal trim and had the extension piece on my SBT cable. I got mine to reach the nozzle and center my steering fine but there's only a few threads holding the heim joint on. Good thing for jam nuts! Hopefully my steering is centered when I ride it otherwise ill need an extension

I like to get as much throw as possible (while still using the steering stops) but I had to set this cable up with less throw at the bars in order to get them centered and use the steering stops because I can't get it long enough on the pump side. I'm probably using two threads for that heim joint...

Extend the cable on the pump side. Easy to do.

I have no idea where I got it but I just installed an OEM style cable end with a built in 3/4" extension. I was going to post it up for others but haven't been able to figure out which ski it came off.

I was using cable ends from sea doos which are longer than anything yamaha, but that was an M5 thread I think. This cable is bigger, and M6 thread count is different... I have to get more taps out to figure out what exactly it is.

This is what I used. It threaded right on to a factory Yamaha steering cable and was the perfect length. I've parted several Yamahas and only one Kawasaki 12F but can't find anything on any of the schematics that looks like it.
