since the water goes in through the exhaust manifold and out through the head, you want the cooling outlets on the head to be on the carb side of the engine, to properly cool the cylinders.
the bolt pattern is symmetrical but the water flow isnt. newB mistake indeed, but not like threatening. id still change it though.

on the bottom i just sanded with 80 then 150 and filled any heavy scratches with epoxy resin. i used the appliance epoxy paint on the bottom. if u are using that leave the surface semi rough so it has a good base to stick to. no primer needed.
