Suggestions needed for surf riding mods

I'll make this short and sweet. Looking for suggestions on what mods I should look at for a 98 superjet. Currently the ski is stock with a scoop grate on it. I ride in lake michigan when the waves are 3 foot or higher. I've found thus far that I wish I had more torque on the low end so I'm starting the search for what I may want to look at doing over the winter.

The possibilities are endless. Low end is easy to accomplish.
Prop - 9/15 will be a good choice
Stubby pump cone.
I would get a bpipe ( not sure if it’s in the budget)
Bilge pump
Then I would do some hull/steering mods
Ride plate
Tubbies
Bars
Quick steering mod

But like jarret said, riding and getting good on the hull is about the best thing to help your actual riding.

All these are great In time but I would save them for winter. Many people start modding skis but even something as simple as a girdled Head is time off the water. Don’t lose summer to some mods.

Reliability First:
1. Limiting Rope - Prevent Pole Breakage.
2. Brapp Straps - Prevent losing Hood.
3. Plug the front breather on the hood and get a bilge pump. Add breather via Handlepole or cut new hole in hood. - Prevent Water Intrusion.

Ridability Second:
1. D-Cut ride plate - Get the nose up and stop pearling wave fronts.
2. Stubby Pump Cone - Let the engine rev a little faster.

Riding Lake Michigan is much different than per say the Pacific near Oceanside, CA. Lake Michigan will toss your chit in no time. Oceanside you have 8-12 seconds between wave breaks. On the Pond you might get 8 seconds on a perfect day in the winter. Ride areas that have natural breaks and shallow sand reefs. Stay away from deep drop off shores. I love Sheboygan for this reason, no plans to ride Milwaukee ever again.

Sounds like a pump cone would be a quick and cheap start. I agree saving other more intensive things for winter. I’m at the point that I’d like to get more from my superjet that I have but long term I would like to move to a rickter. But some other toys need to sell first for that to happen. In the meantime small increments mods that don’t cost an arm and a leg will be done as time and money permits.

Should also add I’m not sure about d cutting the plate until I decide if I’m going to pay for a shorter pole. With the stock pole I already feel like I’m leaning back enough the way it is.

I made my Brapp Straps from a left over boat cover.

I made my limiting rope out of stuff from the hardware store, and it's way more beefy than the crap UMI, Blowsion, or whoever is making!

What would it be like if i just swapped my impeller for right now? Will it mess up the balance the ski has now? Or is it just best to do all the bolt ons at the same time?

The absolute first thing every superjet needs in surf without getting too involved with glasswork is to at least replace the bottom tray mat with hydro turf and put down some nice thick under padding. Your body will thank you. That and a bilge pump.

That didn’t answer my last question... lol

All stock? This impeller alone made a noticeable difference on my 96 Super Jet Solas concord, YB-CD 13/17, I

Currently it’s all stock. I’m on the fence with really making a play for a rickter or missing out the superjet. Either way I’ll be keeping the superjet for someone who comes with to ride so even doing some small mods won’t be a big deal, just don’t want to goof up a balance.

Sorry I didn't see that, you should absolutely replace the impeller asap the stock 90-07 prop was aluminum and cavitates. A solas concord for stock engine, impros hooker 9/15 or 10/16 etc

I turned a sj into a rickter, then thought that I missed my sj so I bought another one, turns out I don’t miss it after riding the edge twice.

9/15. He’s underpowered for a 10/16 and still will be after head, pipe and the other typical bolt ons.

I had an 08 SJ ride surf in the pacific ocean and these mods are what i did to mine with the exception of the prop . The oem prop in the stock pump works fine, although the hookup of a mag pump in white water is significant . A B pipe will wake up the ski a bunch and will give you what you desire. And leave the stock flame arresters intact.
